Cardinals net sectional win
FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Area Cardinals girls hockey team needed just 1:19 to take the lead over the Windom Area Eagles during Section 3A quarterfinal action on Friday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
The No. 4-seeded Cardinals got a hat trick from freshman Myah Lytle as they held on to shut out the No. 5-seeded Eagles 9-0 to advance to the sectional semifinals.
The Cardinals (10-10-1) advance to face the No. 1-seeded New Ulm Eagles in the Section 3A semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in New Ulm.
The top-seeded Eagles earned a first-round postseason bye.
Windom Area finished its season with an overall record of 4-14-1.
Alyssa Fetters found the net quickly for the Cardinals first tally of the game.
Fetters flipped a rebound off a Jalyssa Wilson shot on net over the Eagle netminder to go ahead 1-0 just 1:19 into the game.
Less than two minutes later, Wilson lit up the scoreboard again with an unassisted goal.
Wilson carried the puck into the Eagle zone and avoided one defender before firing a wrister from the slot that scored just inside the post.
Taylor Nuss then capped the six-minute scoring burst with a one-timer goal to put the Cardinals ahead 3-0.
Tieryn Arens controlled the puck for the Cardinals in the neutral zone, finding Lytle on the wing for a saucer pass.
Lytle then snapped a pass to Nuss, who was set up in the slot for the shot.
“I thought that we moved the puck very well tonight,” said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl. “The offense was patient didn’t just take an open shot.”
Lytle then generated the first of her three goals on the night with 4:14 left in the first.
After Nuss tried to jam a shot past Eagle goalie, Emily Steen, the rebound kicked out to Lytle on the right side of the net and she slid her shot in for the goal.
The Nuss and Lytle duo then duplicated its efforts to start the second period, with Lytle catching a Nuss pass and flipping a shot from the slot into the net.
Arens gave the Cardinals a 6-0 advantage with 8:43 left in the second.
Katie Hohensee won a faceoff in the Eagle zone, and Cori Emler quickly sent a pass to Arens at the point. The Cardinal defender then stepped around two Eagles and fired a shot that lit the lamp.
“We were shooting quality shots tonight,” said Kuhl. “Myah, Taylor and Brooke all played fantastic for us tonight, offensively they were patient and did a good job of finding the open pass in the Eagles’ end.”
The Cardinals go three goals in the third to extend their lead to 9-0.
Brooke Lemon scored the first of her two goals with assists from Arens and Nuss on a power play 3:20 into the final period.
Lemon then came back and scored her second goal off a Courtney Williams helper.
Williams fired a pass off the boards that Lemon caught at center ice. Lemon beat one Eagle defender and scored on the breakaway with seven minutes left in the game.
With three minutes left in the playoff game, Lytle completed her hat trick, scoring off a Lemon assist to make it 9-0.
Fairmont Area fired 32 shots on net in the win, while Sadie Sandersfeld and Emily O’Connor combined for five and six saves each for the shut out.
Steen made 23 saves for Windom Area, which recorded 11 shots on net.
