ARMSTRONG – Funeral services for Joan Larsen, 80, of Armstrong, Iowa, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong, with Pastor Vance Toivonen, officiating. Interment will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery.
Joan passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong, Iowa. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today, Feb. 7, at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Armstrong.
Joan S. (Shurts) Larsen was born Sept. 14, 1933, in Sibley, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Harriett (Mallgren) Shurts. She received her education in the Garner, Iowa, Schools, graduating from Garner High School. Joan then attended the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and Buena Vista University, obtaining her bachelor’s degree in education. On June 20, 1959, she was united in marriage to Roger Larsen in Armstrong. The couple made their home in Armstrong, where they began raising their family. Joan, along with being a homemaker, was employed as a teacher in the Armstrong schools. She taught kindergarten, first grade and grades 5-8 social studies. She retired after 36 years of teaching. Following her retirement, Joan worked at the Armstrong Public Library. She loved music and sang with the UNI Acapella Choir, the Sweet Adalines, Country Chords, Many Voices Choir and also the Nazareth Lutheran Choir. She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong; PEO, Eastern Star and Evening Study Club.
Left to cherish Joan’s memory are her husband, Roger; her children, David Larsen and his wife, Terry and their children, Aric, Byron and Nicholas; Donald Larsen and his children, Mercedes, Matthew and Michael; Lori Edwards and her husband, Jerry and their children, Jeremy and Joshua.
Preceding Joan in death were her parents.
