Margaret Ella Patsche Shaffer Sinn, was born June 13, 1921, in Fairmont, Minn., to Leonard William and Hazel Belle (Jones) Patsche. She grew up living next door to her grandparents and aunt, where she spent a lot of time. Growing up, she enjoyed school, swimming in the local lake, and fishing. She graduated from Fairmont Public Schools in 1938 and then attended Minneapolis Business School.
During WWII, she corresponded with Maurice Shaffer who was stationed in Africa and then Sicily. When he was home on leave, they married on Dec. 14, 1943, in Minneapolis. During the next few years, Maurice finished his overseas duty and they moved to Texas and lived on base. During this time, they welcomed their daughter, Sharon. In 1945, after his discharge from the Army, they created their home in Trimont, Minn. They were excited to add two more daughters to their family, Joyce and Barbara. While living in Trimont, Margaret was a long-time employee at the Trimont Progress newspaper. Together they loved getting together with friends and family, playing cards and being active in their church. Then, in 1964, Maurice had a heart attack while on a fishing trip and passed away. Margaret then moved to Fairmont with Barbara where she was a teller at the Fairmont National Bank. While living in Fairmont, Margaret’s neighbors started noticing that the egg and milk delivery man started coming around more frequently. On June 9, 1967, she married that delivery man, Floyd Sinn, and they moved, with Barbara, back to Trimont. They lived and worked on his farm until his retirement in 1979. They then moved into town onto Birch Street. They were active together playing golf, cards, volunteering at church as well as spending time with friends and family. Floyd died in 2007. Margaret was active throughout her life. She loved working at the newspaper and was active in the Auxiliary, Ladies’ Aid, and the UMW. She was an officer in several capacities in all of these organizations. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and “keeping everyone on their toes.” In 2006, Margaret moved to Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn, Minn. She loved the staff there as well as the other residents, and was happy to call it home.
Margaret was 92 when she died at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. She was surrounded by her family who were blessed by spending time with her and each other for her last three days. Her sense of humor and feistiness were present until the very end.
