Bulls trample ’Cats, edge Saints

FAIRMONT – Luis Figueroa gave away nearly 10 pounds and 4 inches of reach to his opponent at 220 pounds, but that couldn’t prevent the Fairmont/Martin County West sophomore wrestler from delivering a meet-clinching decision on Friday night.

Figueroa defeated Travis Brock by a 10-3 decision to put the South Central Conference dual meet out of St. Peter’s reach at 39-30 before heavyweight teammate Adrian Moscoffian delivered a fall in 5:04 over Nick Milliman to ice the Red Bulls’ 45-30 team triumph in Fairmont.

Moscoffian also pinned River Valley opponent Tyler Baird in 1:33 during 285-pound action to cap FHS/MCW’s earlier 55-12 nonconference victory over the Wildcats to exit Cardinal Gym with a triangular sweep.

“We had to make a couple of decisions with our lineup tonight due to some of our guys facing match limits,” Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson said in reference to Figueroa, Class AA No. 7-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber, 113-pounder Collin Steuber and 145-pounder Levi Bulfer all stepping to the canvas just once during Friday’s triangular.

“Luis really came through with a huge decision for us against a much taller opponent at 220 to seal the win over St. Peter,” said Williamson.

Ironically, the Red Bulls and Saints traded the upperhand on the scoreboard back-and-forth until Figueroa and Moscoffian anchored the lineups with key victories.

Wyatt Gillette staked St. Peter to a quick 6-0 lead by earning a pin in 1:05 at 106 pounds before Steuber countered by posting a fall in 4:33 at 113 to knot the team score at 6-all.

Chris Ettesvold generated a pin in 2:49 at 120 to swing a 12-6 lead to FHS/MCW before St. Peter’s Sage Loredo-Hollon answered with a pin in 2:29 at 126.

The Saints regained the edge in the team scoring when 132-pounder Collin Thompson earned the slap of the canvas in 1:40 before the Red Bulls’ Christopher Krenz countered with a fall in 4:51 at 138 for an 18-18 tie again.

FHS/MCW then strung together four consecutive wins – Bulfer’s 2-1 decision, Cesarioa Lerma’s forfeit, Weber’s quick-tilt fall in 38 seconds at 160 and Tanner Lange’s 3-2 win – to double the team ledger at 36-18.

St. Peter, however, answered on the strength of Major Brock’s fall in 1:59 at 182 and teammate Tony Putz’s pin in 1:03 at 195 to close within 36-30 prior to Figueroa’s match.

In its opener against River Valley, FHS/MCW combined five forfeits with falls from Christian Jagodzinske (126), Dayton Nielsen (145) and Moscoffian (285) to coast to the lopsided 43-point margin of victory.

Christian Hugget earned a 7-5 decision at 106 to get the Red Bulls’ scoring stampede going before Zac Ringnell received a forfeit.

Ettesvold compiled a 15-4 major decision at 120 prior to Jagodzinske’s fall in 1:26, Kolin Kelly took a forfeit at 138, Nielsen produced a pin in only 42 seconds before Lerma (152), Harley Luhmann (160) and Phillip Bowie (170) collected forfeits.

Fairmont/Martin County West (11-4) plays host to the eight-team Red Bulls Invitational at 10 a.m. today in Sherburn.

St. Peter (5-17) is idle until competing in the South Central Conference Meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in St. James.
