Donald R. Gronewald

FAIRMONT – Funeral services for Donald R. Gronewald, 84, of Fairmont, formerly of Granada, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial will follow the service in Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Fairmont. Military honors will be provided by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County VFW Post 1222.

Don passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 29, 2014, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to the time of service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Reed Gronewald was born Oct. 11, 1929, in Granada, Minn. He was the son of Deidrich and Emma (Warner) Gronewald. He attended school in Granada. In 1951, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the 2nd Armored Division as part of the occupation forces in Germany. He received an honorable discharge in 1952. On May 1, 1954, Don was united in marriage to Dolores (Eisenbarger) at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont. The couple resided in Center Creek Township near Granada, Minn. Don was named Martin County’s Outstanding Young Farmer in 1960. He and Dolores farmed until Don retired in 1997. He was active in the community serving as a 4-H leader, on the Martin County 4-H Counsel and President of the local Farm Bureau. Don never lost his passion for farming even after he and Dolores moved to Fairmont in 2012. They shared 59 years together. Don and Dolores loved to travel throughout the United States as well as all over the world. They were avid campers all their married lives and served as Hitch Hiker RV Club International Events Managers for seven years. They also guided RV tours all over the U.S. and Canada. They enjoyed wintering in Florida, Texas and, for the last 17 years, in Arizona. Don earned his private pilot license later in life. Don and Dolores were members of Granada Congregational United Church of Christ. While there, Don was an active member of the church board, served as a chairperson, treasurer, building committee and many other committees. After the church closed, Don and Dolores became members at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont where Don remained an active volunteer. He also spent his time volunteering at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. He found great joy in helping others. During his free time, Don enjoyed woodworking and wood carving along with his volunteering and traveling.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Dolores Gronewald of Fairmont, Minn.; daughter, Kim Hall (Dan) of Eagan, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Ann Gronewald of Granada, Minn.; grandchildren, Ross (Jessica) Gronewald of Granada, Minn., Rachel (Aaron) Jarvinen of Lakeville, Minn., Megan Hall of Bloomington, Minn., Alison Hall of Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Kayla (Alex) Hinseth of West St. Paul, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Ainsley and Ingrid Gronewald, and Brelyn Jarvinen; mother-in-law, Lucille Gorgen of Fairmont, Minn.; sister, Inez Vandinburg of St. Peter, Minn.; sister-in-law, Norma Gronewald of Fairmont, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Deidrich and Emma Gronewald, Don was preceded in death by his son, Scott Gronewald; brother, Max Gronewald; infant brother, LeRoy Gronewald; sisters, Maxine Bober, LaVonne Nave, and Jeanette Gronewald; fathers-in-law, Ora Eisenbarger, and William Gorgen; and brothers-in-law, Jim Eisenbarger, Roy Vandinburg, Marlin Nave, and Walter Bober.
