Antique shop opens in mall
FAIRMONT – Back in Time Treasures isn’t the kind of business venture that develops overnight.
Located at Five Lakes Centre in Fairmont, the shop showcases a variety of antique and collectible items, from figurines and other knick-knacks, tables and dressers, books and games, and of course toys – lots and lots of toys.
“I just love old things. We both love old things,” said owner Linda Schultz, speaking for herself and husband Roger Schultz.
For 20-plus years, the couple have been gathering interesting old cultural relics from years gone by, keeping some to build up their private collections and decorate their home. The rest they sell, participating during warmer months in outdoor flea markets nearby and as far away as Texas.
“People are so excited about this being out here,” Linda said, describing the reaction to Back in Time Treasures opening at the mall.
Customers are often interested in the history of different objects and how they were originally used. Sometimes they like to reminisce and a certain piece will momentarily bring them back in time to a different era, and sometimes they just like the look of something.
These are just a few of the reasons Linda likes to be in the business. It’s not to get rich, she says.
“At our prices, we’re not going to get rich doing it, but we both truly like antiques and like being around the public. It’s fun to us, but it’s also hard work – really hard work,” she said.
The items for sale at Back in Time Treasures are priced based on the Schultzes’ experience with collectibles. They know what they had to pay to procure a piece, and they also have a general understanding of the demand for certain items, particularly ones that are on short supply over the ages.
“If we hold onto something for a long time and it just isn’t selling, I’ll usually drop the price, but there are a few things I won’t budge on,” Linda said.
Sometimes it’s just a matter of waiting for the right buyer to turn up.
“A lot of times we’ll handle something 20 times before it sells, hauling it in and out of the trailer for different flea markets,” she said.
Posted hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, though hours of operation do fluctuate somewhat depending on mall traffic. On Monday, for instance, due to the extreme cold and blizzard conditions, the shop was closed.
