Marshall hockey shuts out Fairmont Area

FAIRMONT – The Marshall Tigers boys hockey team scored a pair of goals in a little over two minutes to take the lead in the first period.

The Tigers wouldn’t stop there though, and added seven more on their way to a 9-0 nonconference victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Saturday at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

“It seemed like Marshall was just doing everything so well,” said Fairmont Area head coach Brady Meyer. “Their passes were tape to tape and their shots were right on the whole game.”

Blaine Moran, who netted a natural hattrick for the Tigers, got the scoring started 3:20 into the game.

With the Tigers on the penalty kill, Moran caught a Derek Rasmussen pass in the Cardinal zone and fired a shot top-shelf for the short-handed score.

Andrew Bell then scored two minutes and eight seconds later to go ahead 2-0.

Nick Foskvick and Casper Larsen both fired shots at the Cardinal netminder, Colton Cunning, and Bell smashed home a rebound for the score.

“I think we came out flat early and they were able to take advantage of that,” said Meyer. “It’s hard to get momentum or rhythm going when your schedule gets to be unpredictable like it’s been with the weather. But Marshall still played a great game.”

Sebastian Landry then added to the Tigers’ lead 2:37 into the second.

Landry scored on a rebound, sliding a saved Jeremiah Barker and Brent Haukom shot attempt through the crease for a goal.

Alex Buysse then fired a point blank shot off a Dylan Cruquiet-Danielson assist over the shoulder of Cunning for a goal.

Moran then found the goal for the second of his three goals with 2:06 left in the second.

Moran carried the puck into the Cardinal zone and skated down the slot, sliding the puck for a forehand wrister that found the twine.

Moran then completed his hattrick in the third. Alex Buysse blasted a shot from the point and after the shot ricocheted off the pipe, Moran buried the rebound on the far side of the net to go ahead 6-0.

Derek Rasmussen scored the first of his two lamp lighters with a wrister in the slot with just over eight minutes left.

Moran and Taylor Rasmussen each recorded assists on Derek Rasmussen’s goal.

Matt Van Keulen, with the help of Jacob Buysse and Nick Fosvick then put the Tigers ahead 8-0 with a netfinder.

Derek Rasmussen scored his second goal with 2:30 showing on the clock, with an assist to Moran for his fifth point of the game.

The Tigers finished with 44 shots on net, while the Cardinals fired just 8 on goal.

Cunning finished the game with 35 saves for the Cardinals and Marshall goaltender, Mason Campion recorded the shut out with all eight saves.

Fairmont Area (2-11, 0-3) plays host to Redwood Valley in a nonconference game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
