Wolverines ease past Falcons

MOUNTAIN LAKE – The Class 1A, No. 3-ranked Mountain Lake Area Wolverines continued their undefeated streak through the Red Rock Conference with a 69-30 basketball victory over the Red Rock Central Falcons on Thursday night in Mountain Lake.

Carter Kirk nearly collected a double-double performance by pouring in a game-leading 19 points and pulling down nine rebounds to pace the Wolverines’ effort.

Josh Fast generated nine points and seven boards for the Wolverines, while teammate Demar Rodney also tallied nine points.

The Wolverines made 25 of 58 attempts from the floor.

Thomas Blomgren topped the Falcons with 11 points.

Mountain Lake Area (15-1, 10-0 Red Rock) plays host to Class 1A, No. 10-ranked Ellsworth in a conference game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Mountain Lake.

Red Rock Central (0-13, 0-9) plays host to Hill-Beaver Creek in a conference game tonight in Lamberton.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 59, Truman/Martin Luther 46 – The Knights continued their undefeated run in the Valley Conference by fending off the BluejayKnights 59-46 on Thursday night in Lake Crystal.

Bryson Yackel generated 14 points, five rebounds and three assists for LCWM, which made 20 of 47 field goals and 13 of 19 at the line.

Nick Thul contributed 14 points for the Knights.

Sam Geistfeld earned another double-double performance, scoring 28 points, including 20 in the first half, and pulling down 13 caroms for the BluejayKnights.

Alex Weihe also produced a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds for TML, which made 19 of 55 shots from the floor and made 6 of 9 free throws.

Lake Crytsal-Wellcome Memorial (12-5, 8-0 Valley) travels to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton tonight.

Truman/Martin Luther (7-10, 4-5) plays host to Sleepy Eye next Thursday night in Truman.

Madelia 64, Nicollet 52 – Jack Bergeman and Derrick Van Hee combined for 45 points to steer the Blackhawks to a 12-point Valley Conference victory over the Raiders on Thursday night in Madelia.

Bergeman scored a game-best 24 points, including 21 in the second half, to go with three assists, while Van Hee tallied 21 points and doled out three assists.

Zach Baumgartner contributed four points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals to Madelia’s win.

Matt Christensen scored 13 points to top Nicollet’s performance, while teammates Matt Fischer and Colin Bloemke contributed 10 points apiece.

Madelia (7-10, 4-5 Valley) plays host to Glenville-Emmons at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Girls Basketball

Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s 69, Martin Luther 42 – The Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s Knights held the Martin Luther Knights to just 18 points in the first half to help claim the 69-42 nonconference victory on Thursday in Sleepy Eye.

Larissa Helget topped St. Mary’s with 21 points.

Kayley Shoen scored a team-leading 18 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals for Martin Luther.

Alexis Brummond netted 10 points in addition to garnering four rebounds for Martin Luther, while teammate Hunter Payne grabbed eight boards and pocketed three steals.

Martin Luther made 13 of 47 attempts from inside the arc, while sinking just 2 of 16 shots from 3-point range. The visiting Knights also made 10 of 21 free throws in the game.

Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s (6-8) travels to Mankato Loyola for a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday night.

Martin Luther (5-7, 4-3 Valley) hits the road to Madelia tonight for a conference contest.
