Magic beam by St. James

WELCOME – The Martin County Area Magic closed out the home portion of this season’s gymnastics schedule with their second-best team total.

Freshman Bryanna Peterson captured three individual events to claim the all-around crown, while freshman teammate Martha Olson won the vault to power the Magic to a 137.025-101.975 South Central Conference dual-meet decision over the St. James Saints on Thursday night in Welcome.

In fact, Martin County Area swept the top four spots on all four pieces of equipment to nearly equal its season’s-best score of 137.125 points recorded in a season-opening victory over Luverne on Dec. 3.

“I don’t know the exact numbers, but that was one of our best beam sets of the season, and I thought we had nice floor scores tonight, too,” said Magic mentor LeeAnn Steen, whose lineup closes out the dual-meet regular season by traveling to St. Peter on Monday before hitting the road to New Ulm on Friday, Jan. 31.

Peterson tumbled her way to a first-place total of 8.85 on the floor to top the Magic’s team mark of 34.75, while Olson delivered a second-place 8.8 to pack punch to the purple-and-white point production.

Maggie Bachenberg supplied a third-place total of 8.575, while Lexy Ringnell trailed her MCA teammate by only five-hundredths of a point – 8.525 – to pocket fourth on the floor.

Olson opened the SCC dual meet by planting her first Tsuk off the vault table for a winning mark of 9.2, while teammate Mackenzie Betts elevated her vault to a second-place 8.95.

Sydney Leichtnam and Peterson rounded out the Magic’s top-four sweep on the vault by landing their efforts for an 8.85 and an 8.775, respectively.

Peterson later edged Betts for top accolades on the balance beam – 8.7-8.55, while teammates Maiya Dietz and Jenna Steele completed the sweep with an 8.15 and an 8.1, respectively.

Peterson also chalked up first-place honors on the uneven parallel bars by swinging front giants on the high bar to earn an 8.55, while Magic teammate Briana Gratz delivered a runner-up mark of 8.325.

Andrea Thate and Sydney Leichtnam completed MCA’s sweep on the unevens by producing an 8.275 and a 7.85, respectively, to net third and fourth.

Martin County Area competes in the True Team Class A State Meet at noon Saturday at Melrose High School.
