Merlyn R. Johnson

FAIRMONT – Private family services for Merlyn R. “Mert” Johnson, 83, of Fairmont, will be 11 a.m. today at Truman Senior Living in Truman. Inurnment with full military honors will take place at a later date in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Johnson died Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is in charge of arrangements.

Merlyn Royce Johnson was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Minot, N.D., the son of Charles and Linda (Aus) Johnson. On Dec. 17, 1948, Mert enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force for one year plus reserve time. On Jan. 6, 1951, Mert entered active duty in the Korean Conflict. He served his country in Korea as a paratrooper with the Army Rangers. Mert was awarded the parachute badge as well as the Korean Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge on Dec. 24, 1952.

Survivors include: his wife, Elna Johnson of Truman; sons, Joel Johnson of Centuria, Wis., Jeri Johnson of Welcome, and Jon Johnson of Elysian; daughter, Jana Roeman of Ceylon; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Beryl Knudson of Duluth, and Ruby Morenson of Herman; and brother, David Johnson of Cloquet.
