New Ulm shuts out Cardinals
NEW ULM – The New Ulm Eagles girls hockey team generated four goals in the second period to blank the Fairmont Area Cardinals 5-0 in South Central Conference hockey action on Friday night in New Ulm.
Erika Ries scored the Eagles’ lone goal in the opening period with an assist from Brittany Denn at the 9:20 mark.
Fairmont Area netminder Sadie Sandersfeld, who made 28 saves in the game, helped to keep the Eagles from generating any other offense during the opening frame.
In the second period, Eagles forward Brook Schugel needed less than two minutes to score the second goal of the conference contest.
Ashley Sandeberg then added a lamp-lighter with helpers coming from Ries and Carson Reed, before Morgan Schaefer netted a goal with assists to Lexie Weiss and Dani Weiss during a 10-second span in the middle segment.
The fourth New Ulm goal came off the stick of Denn, with an assist to Miranda McMullen with 2:16 left in the period, but that was all the Eagles needed for the win.
Neither Fairmont Area nor New Ulm managed to produce a goal during the final 17-minute segment.
New Ulm goaltender Brooke Landreville stopped all 10 of the Cardinals’ shots on goal for the shutout victory.
Fairmont Area (8-9, 0-3 South Central) travels to Marshall for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against the Tigers at Marshall-Lockwood Motors Ice Arena.
New Ulm (15-5, 6-0) plays host to nonconference opponent New Prague next Friday night in New Ulm.
