Sylvan R. Struck
SHERBURN – Celebration of Life Services for Sylvan R. Struck, 70, of Sherburn, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at First Congregational-United Church of Christ in Sherburn, Minn., with Pastor Susan Lester, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Fairmont, Minn.
Sylvan was called to his eternal rest on Wednesday evening, Jan. 8, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, Minn. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Family Funeral Home in Sherburn, Minn.

Sylvan Roger Struck was born Dec. 19, 1943, in Fairmont, Minn., to William and Alma (Bicknase) Struck. He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1961 and earned a degree in education from Mankato State University. He began teaching English in the public school system in Maynard, Minn. In March of 1966, he married Carolyn Jurs in Ceylon, Minn. They resided in Maynard until 1967, when they moved to Sherburn, Minn., where he taught junior/senior high school. In the early 1970s, he took a brief break from teaching and worked at Eagle Air Manufacturing until 1974, when he pursued his photography hobby by starting a photo-processing business in Fairmont called The Photo Gazelle. In 1984, he returned to his passion, teaching. He continued with Sherburn schools and joined the Sherburn Fire Department, where he served many years. He later earned additional certification through Bemidji State University in mathematics, which he began teaching in addition to English. After his retirement in 2005, he remained an active substitute teacher for Martin County West and volunteered for the Senior Linkage Line. Sylvan was a member of the UCC First Congregational Church in Sherburn. He enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, playing cards, camping, transforming “The Creamery” and spending time with family, friends and many beloved family pets.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carolyn “Teena” Struck of Sherburn, Minn.; three children, Lenita Gratz Struck, Leslie (Daryn) Stoltenberg and Billy (Melissa Hanson) Struck, all of Mankato, Minn. Papa Sy was a proud grandfather of Alyssa, Kasey, Alec, Hope and Danielle. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews and other close relatives, along with his treasured pets, Molly and Simba.
Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alma Struck; brother, Eugene Struck; and many other relatives.
