No. 2 Fairmont flattens New Ulm, 78-52
NEW ULM – Fairmont senior guard Mitch Pfingsten scored a game-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds and six assists to pace the Class 2A, No. 2-ranked Cardinal basketball team to a 78-52 South Central Conference victory over the Eagles on Thursday night in New Ulm.
Jay Ruen and Luke Becker each contributed 14 points in the balanced Cardinal attack that made 32 of 64 attempts from inside the arc.
Ruen also grabbed four boards, while Becker doled out three assists for the Cardinals, who have won their last nine games.
Fairmont forward Josh Eversman neared double-double territory by scoring 13 points, grabbing seven rebounds and distributing four assists.
Ben Abel contributed 10 points to go along with three steals and three assists, while Walker Tordsen scored four points for Fairmont.
The Cardinals swished 8 of 20 from behind the 3-point line, and went 6 of 10 from the charity stripe.
New Ulm senior Grant Kannegiesser scored a team-leading 17 points, while center Tyler Dittrich contributed eight points.
Fairmont (13-1, 5-1 SCC) travels to Jackson County Central for a 4 p.m. nonconference game on Saturday. New Ulm (2-11, 0-5 SCC) travels to play a 6 p.m. game on Saturday in Faribault.

Fairmont outpaced New Ulm, 53-38, during B-squad action on Thursday in New Ulm.
Kale Fritz scored a game-high 15 points, in addition to pulling down eight boards, to top the Cardinals.
Josh Liljenquist, Walker Tordsen and Noah Quiring each contributed eight points in the win.
Quiring also snagged 11 rebounds, while Tordsen grabbed eight caroms off the glass.
Fairmont topped New Ulm, 60-41, during C-squad action on Thursday in New Ulm.
Christian Engeman topped the Cardinals with 15 points, while Tyler Johnson and Carter Lloyd added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
St. James 83, Blue Earth Area 46 – The Saints had four players score in double digits to down the Bucs 83-46 during South Central Conference action on Thursday in St. James.
Zach Brandts scored a game-high 28 points to pace the Saints’ winning efforts.
Walker Froehling added a double-double performance of 12 points and 11 boards, while John Olsen scored 12 in the balanced attack.
Jordan Sandmeyer also tallied 10 points in the win for the Saints.
Luke Monson scored 20 points to top the Bucs’ offense that made 10 of 17 free throw line.
Blue Earth Area (3-7, 2-4 South Central) plays host to United South Central in a nonconference game on Monday night.
St. James (10-1, 4-1 South Central) plays host to Mountain Lake Area on Monday in St. James.
Martin County West 59, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 38 – The Mavericks scored 40 points in the second half and remained undefeated in the Valley Conference with a 59-38 win over the Bulldogs on Thursday night in Janesville.
Cordell Weber scored a game-high 18 points and doled out seven assists, while Richard Eckmann netted a double-double performance of 15 points and 10 boards for the Mavericks.
Jake Faber contributed 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the winning effort.
Martin County West swished 7 of 17 behind the arc, while making 13 of 39 for 2 points in the game.
The Mavericks also shot 75 percent from the charity stripe, making 12 of 16 attempts.
Ricky Johnson scored 12 points to top the Bulldogs, while teammates Sawyer Gahler and Kyle Fisel each netted nine points.
Martin County West (6-2, 4-0 Valley) plays host to Waseca in a 4:30 p.m. nonconference game on Saturday in Sherburn.
Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (5-7, 2-1 Valley) travels to play a conference game today in St. Clair.
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 69, Granada-Huntley-East Chain 53 – The Knights continued their undefeated run through the Valley Conference with a 69-53 victory over the Mustangs on Thursday in East Chain.
Bryson Yackel scored a team-leading 16 points, while Michael Coates and Colin Kater netted 13 and 12 points, respectively, to pace the Knights’ winning efforts.
Nick Thul contributed 11 points and Mark Jacobs tallied nine points as the Knights made 25 of 40 field goals.
The Knights also shot 73 percent from the free throw line, making 11 of 15 shots.
Ryan Shumski topped the Mustangs with a game-high 19 pionts, while Logan Pytleski poured in 13 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Trent Stensland recorded eight points and teammate Josh Johanson netted seven points to go along with five rebounds.
Josh Wolter doled out four assists and made three steals for the Mustangs, who made 21 of 38 from inside the arc, but missed all 10 attempts for 3.
The Mustangs made 11 of 23 free throws in the game.
Granada-Huntley-East Chain (2-6, 2-2 Valley) travels to play Alden-Conger in a conference game tonight in Alden.
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial (7-4, 4-0 Valley) plays host to Mankato Loyola tonight.
Mountain Lake Area 86, Adrian 55 – The Class 1A, No. 3-ranked Wolverines remained undefeated, winning their 11th straight game by beating the Dragons 86-55 in Red Rock Conference action on Thursday night in Mountain Lake.
Carter Kirk netted a double-double performance of 17 points and 11 rebounds, and added five assists to pace the Wolverines.
Cody Klassen poured in 13 points, while Josh Fast neared double-double numbers with 12 points and nine assists for MLA.
Andrew Hempeck distributed eight assists for the Wolverines.
Brady Lonneman and Nick Reyne topped the Dragons with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Mountain Lake Area (11-0, 7-0 Red Rock) travels to play St. James in a conference game on Monday night in St. James.
