No. 2 FHS fends off St. James in overtime
ST. JAMES – Fairmont junior forward Ben Abel scored on a Mitch Pfingsten assist with four seconds left in overtime to give the Class 2A, No. 2-ranked Cardinals a 67-65 lead over St. James on Friday night.
The Saints had a last-second shot at either tying or winning the game, but Pfingsten altered the attempt to clinch the South Central Conference victory on Friday night in St. James.
Pfingsten finished with a team-leading 23 points, while grabbing four rebounds and doling out three assists.
Abel scored six points for Fairmont, including the game-winning shot, while teammate Josh Eversman netted 20 points and eight boards for the Cardinals.
Luke Becker scored eight points, while Jay Ruen generated seven points and five rebounds.
Taylor Beebe rounded out the Fairmont scoring with three points.
Fairmont made 29 of 72 attempts from inside the arc, while making just 4 of 26 from 3-point range.
Walker Froehling scored a game-high 27 points to pace the Saints, while teammate Zach Brandts tallied 26 points in the game.
Fairmont (11-1, 4-1 SCC) plays host to Granada-Huntley-East Chain in a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Cardinal Gym.

North Union 58, Corwith-Wesley-Luverne 47 – North Union senior Jacob Braddock scored a team-leading 16 points to go along with six rebounds to pace the Warriors to a 58-47 Corn Belt Conference win over the Panthers on Friday night in Armstrong.
Aric Runge added a double-double performance of 12 points and 13 boards, while teammate Kaleb Olson netted 11 points for the Warrior offense.
Colin Runksmeier added eight points and four steals, while Trent Pedersen scored five points in the win.
Alex Krantz pulled down seven boards for the Warriors.
North Union (2-7, 2-2 Corn Belt) plays host to West Hancock in a 7:30 p.m. game on Monday in Armstrong.
Blue Earth Area 77, St. Peter 67 – The Bucs downed the Saints 77-67 during South Central Conference action on Friday in Blue Earth.
Buc senior Luke Monson exploded for a double-double performance of 26 points and 20 rebounds to pace the home team in the win.
Bailey Olson added 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Quinn Huisman generated 11 points to go along with nine boards.
Tom Steidler scored 26 points, while Kolin Bartlett added 24 to pace the Saints offense.
The Bucs outrebounded the Saints 52-29 in the contest.
Blue Earth Area (3-6, 2-3 SCC) plays host to New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.
