Cardinals blast Eagles, 11-0
FAIRMONT – It is tough to beat a team three times in a season, but with a pair of five-goal victories under its belt, the Fairmont Area girls hockey team was able to capture the trifecta by beating the Windom Area Eagles 11-0 on Friday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
The Cardinals had beaten the Eagles on two previous occasions this season, winning 5-0 on Nov. 19 before winning 7-2 a month later on Dec. 19.
With help of points leader sophomore Jalyssa Wilson, the Cardinals rattled off 11 goals to take the season sweep on Friday night
“We played well tonight. The girls were focused right away and I thought that everything was just clicking,” said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl.
Logyn Cone lit up the scoreboard first for the Cardinals, taking the 1-0 lead with just under nine minutes left in the first period.
Courtney Williams fired a pass to Erin Rahm to clear the puck out of the Cardinal zone. Rahm then zipped a pass through neutral ice to Cone.
Cone, who netted two goals and an assist in the game, carried the puck into the Eagles’ zone, spun and tranferred the puck to her forehand before blasting a shot from the slot for the goal.
Brooke Lemon, who also had a three-point night, scored the first of her two goals to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0.
Myah Lytle sent a shot on net, but Windom Area goalie Madison Willard blocked it for one of her 46 saves.
Lemon was there to collect the rebound, and flipped a shot into the net with 7:46 left in the opening period.
Wilson, who has 27 points this season, then got her chance to score to make it 3-0.
After Kelsy Junkermeier caught the puck off a faceoff in the Eagle zone, she snapped a pass to Cone, who then slid a pass to Wilson on the left wing.
Wilson fired a shot just inside the post to give Fairmont Area a three-goal lead.
“Tonight was a balanced game, which was nice to see,” said Kuhl. “We had a lot of people score and a lot of players contributed, so that was great.”
The fourth different scorer in the period, this time Alyssa Fetters found the net for a tally.
Fetters was standing just outside the crease when defender Tieryn Arens blasted a shot from the point, the eighth grade forward then banged home the rebound with 3:24 left in the period.
The Cardinals then went on to add four goals in the second, three by different players to stake an 8-0 advantage.
Kelsy Junkermeier, who assisted on Wilson’s first goal, scored on a tipped shot with less than eight minutes left in the period.
Lauren Carlson fired a shot toward the Eagle net, but a Wilson tip shifted the trajectory and Junkermeier’s quick hands flipped the puck into the net.
Taylor Nuss then joined the scoring parade, tapping in a rebound off an Arens blast from the blue line.
Wilson generated her second goal with the help of a Lemon assist, before Arens finally found the net on a shot from up top.
Arens carried the puck to the middle of the blue line, before rocketing a shot just under the crossbar to put the Cardinals up 8-0.
Williams scored in the third on a shot from the point, with an assist to Katie Hohensee, before Cone and Wilson each added their second goals of the night.
