Cardinals coast by Trojans in Schwan’s Cup

BLAINE – Jalyssa Wilson erupted for four goals and three assists, while teammate Tieryn Arens distributed five assists to help power the Fairmont Area Cardinals hockey team to a 12-2 rout over the Worthington Trojans during the seventh-place game of the Schwan’s Cup White Division on Wednesday in Blaine.

Wilson triggered the Cardinals’ offensive avalanche by converting a double-assist from Brooke Lemon and Taylor Nuss into the game’s initial goal only 2:55 into the opening period.

Nuss and Wilson then traded roles as Nuss hammered home a goal off assists from Wilson and Courtney Williams to stake Fairmont Area to a 2-0 lead at the 4:26 juncture.

The Trojans sliced their deficit in half via Allison Kremer’s unassisted goal before Wilson and Nuss ignited the Cardinals’ ensuing four-goal barrage to close out the first frame.

Wilson netted her second goal of the game off a double-assist from Arens and Nuss before Jenna Klages reached the scoring column with an unassisted netfinder at the 13:23 mark.

Logyn Cone then reeled off back-to-back goals off a pass from Wilson and later, a double-assist from Wilson and Arens, to widen the Cardinals’ margin to 6-1.

Wilson then opened the second period with back-to-back netfinders to stake Fairmont Area to a commanding 8-1 advantage on the scoreboard. Cone and Kelsy Junkermeier combined for a double-assist on Wilson’s third goal of the contest before Arens fed Wilson for No. 4 on the day.

Myah Lytle then converted an Arens assist into a goal at the 15:14 mark of the middle segment for a 9-1 lead before Klages tallied another unassisted goal only 12 seconds later.

Betsy Thompson cashed in a late double-assist from Ashley Thompson and Taylor Bryngelson to leave the Trojans’ deficit at 10-2 after two completed frames.

Kelsy Junkermeier then delivered a third-period goal off a double-assist from Nuss and Lauren Carlson before Lemon capped the offensive barrage by slapping home a pass from Arens at the 9:35 mark of the final frame.

Fairmont Area goalie Emily O’Connor made seven saves to net the win, while Worthington netminder Amanda Bristow finished with 37 stops.

Fairmont Area (6-7) plays host to Windom Area at 7 p.m. Friday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

Marshall 4, Fairmont Area 3, OT – Hanna Peterson scored the game-winning goal at the 6:31 mark in overtime to complete her hat trick and help the Tigers scratch the Cardinals, 4-3, during consolation semifinal action Tuesday in the Schwan’s Cup White Division in Blaine.

Fairmont Area built an early 3-0 lead by the early stages of the second period before Marshall rallied behind Peterson to force an extra session.

Taylor Nuss opened the consolation semifinal’s scoring off an assist from Myah Lytle at the 6:40 mark of the first frame. Lytle and Nuss then traded roles as Lytle found the Tigers’ net off a Nuss pass to stake the Cardinals to a 2-0 lead after one completed period.

Tieryn Arens then widened Fairmont Area’s margin to 3-0 by converting Lytle’s second assist of the game into a goal at the 10:54 juncture of the second frame.

Peterson, however, netted back-to-back goals to inch the Tigers within 3-2 by the 13:36 mark of the second period. Peterson tallied an unassisted goal at the 11:47 juncture before cashing in Teegan Wyffels’ assist at the 13:36 mark.

Sara Antony then delivered the equalizer for Marshall, finding the Fairmont Area net 24 seconds later off a pass from Miranda Fischer to knot the game at 3-all.

Neither team scored during the third period before Peterson scored the game-winning goal in overtime.

Marshall goalie Morgan Morrill made 27 saves to net the win, while Fairmont Area netminder Sadie Sandersfeld turned away 36 shots.
