Thunder roll past Cardinals

ST. CLOUD – Guard Lexi Funaro scored a game-best 25 points to guide the Zimmerman Thunder to a 56-42 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals during second-round girls basketball action in the St. Cloud Tech Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Unfortunately for Fairmont, Zimmerman’s 14-point victory put an end to the Cardinals’ eight-game winning streak.

Power forward Alex Christianson neared double-double territory to pace Fairmont’s effort. Christianson scored nine points, garnered nine rebounds and distributed three assists.

Post player Courtney Mosloski generated eight points and eight rebounds for the Cardinals, while center Kayla Lardy supplied six points and five boards.

Sierra Schrader contributed six points, Kristen Campe tallied five points, while Sierra Schultz scored four points for Fairmont.

The Cardinals made 15 of 42 shots from 2-point range for 36 percent, 1 of 4 from behind the 3-point arc and 9 of 14 at the free throw line for 64 percent.

Fairmont (8-2, 3-0 South Central) plays host to conference opponent St. James on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Windom Area Holiday Classic

Windom Area 61, Blue Earth Area 52 – The Eagles clipped the Bucs 61-52 to win the Windom Area Holiday Classic on Saturday in Windom.

Jenna Stevermer led the Bucs with 20 points, including 12 from 3, pulled down four rebounds and made three steals in the final.

Taylor Grandgenett added nine points with seven coming from the free throw line, while Karli Olsen netted eight points.

Olsen also pulled down 10 boards and made three steals for the Bucs.

Paige Darrington tallied seven points for the Bucs, who made 9 of 46 frokm 2 and 6 of 21 from behind the arc.

The Bucs swished 16 of their 28 free throw attempts.

Blue Earth Area (3-4, 1-2 SCC) travels to play a conference game at 7:30 p.m. Friday in St. Peter.
