North Stars breeze by Cardinals
MINNEAPOLIS – Prairie Centre’s Cody Steward produced two goals and an assist, while goalie Clay Deters netted a shutout to power the North Stars to a 5-0 win over the Fairmont Area Cardinals in the first round of the Minnehaha Academy hockey tournament on Thursday.
Prairie Centre (7-4) faces Minnehaha Academy – a 10-3 winner over Morris/Benson Area – today for the tourney title at the Academy’s Ice Arena in Minneapolis. Fairmont Area (0-7) plays Morris/Benson Area in the third-place game at 2:30 p.m. today.
Alexsi Runola delivered the North Stars’ first-period goal at the 4:10 mark before Preston Pung and Steward combined to account for Prairie Centre’s three second-period scores.
Pung recorded an unassisted goal only 2:57 into the middle frame before Steward fed Pung for his second goal at the 5:30 juncture.
Steward then converted Jeremy Brever’s assist into his second point of the contest at the 8:41 mark to extend the North Stars’ lead to 4-0.
Steward then capped Prairie Centre’s scoring by delivering an unassisted goal at the 2:04 juncture of the third.
Deters turned away all 23 of Fairmont Area’s shots on goal to earn the shutout for the Stars.
Colton Cunning registered 19 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals.
