Cardinals breeze by Trojans, 15-1

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Area Cardinals girls hockey team scored seven goals in the opening 10 minutes to ease by the Worthington Trojans 15-1 during a nonconference game on Tuesday at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

Taylor Nuss, who is leading the team in scoring with 15 points, netted a hat trick to pace the Cardinals’ offensive onslaught.

“It was really great tonight to get nine different people scoring,” said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl. “We shot the lights out and played well, which was good.”

In addition to Nuss’ quick-fire shots, Logyn Cone, Jalyssa Wilson, Jordyn Junkermeier and Kelsy Junkermeier each scored two goals in the game for the Cardinals.

Nuss netted the first goal of the game, flipping a backhander into the net just one minute and 47 seconds into the game.

Wilson and Cone were each credited with an assist on the tally, before each scored their own lamp lighters.

Cone found the net for her first goal of the game 37 seconds later, snapping a wrist shot into the net for a shorthanded score.

Wilson then followed 50 seconds later with another shorthanded goal, flipping a backhander past Worthington netminder Amanda Bristow to go ahead 3-0.

Nuss and Wilson then combined for a goal with just under 12 minutes left in the opening frame. Wilson fired a shot toward the net, but Bristow blocked it for one of her 64 saves, and Nuss buried the rebound.

“The nice thing about our scoring chances tonight, was that we were finishing them,” said Kuhl. “With 79 shots on goal, we had our chances and we were able to finish on a number of them.”

Six seconds later, Wilson netted her second goal of the game, carrying it into the Trojan zone before ripping a shot through the crease to go ahead 5-0.

Tieryn Arens tipped a Katie Hohensee shot past Bristow for a goal with 8:55 left in the period, before Nuss completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal.

A pair of firsts in the game helped the Cardinals hold onto their lead later in the game. In her first game back from injury, Courtney Williams blasted a shot from the point on an Alyssa Fetters assist by the leg pad of Bristow for her first varsity goal on a power play halfway through the third.

Cardinal goaltender Emily O’Connor stopped nine of the 10 shots she saw in the game, recording her first varsity win between the pipes.

Fetters netted a goal in the second period, before assisting on two in the third.

Cone added her second score of the night in the third frame, while Jordyn Junkermeier and Kelsy Junkermeier each found the net.

Lauren Carlson netted a third-period goal with just over three minutes left in the game, sandwiched between Kelsy Junkermeier and Jordyn Junkermeier’s second goals of the period.

The Cardinals fired 79 shots on net in the win, while holding the Trojans to just 10 shots.

Allison Kremer scored Worthington’s lone goal, carrying it into the Cardinal zone before ripping a shot past O’Connor in the second period.
