Blue Earth OKs state request

BLUE EARTH – Minnesota Department of Transportation has received the release of three streets used as detours during Highway 169 construction. Blue Earth City Council approved the request Monday.

“What they’re asking for is that we’re not going to hold them responsible for any repair,” said Wes Brown, city engineer. “I don’t believe there is any damage to those areas.”

The streets are Walnut Street from Sixth Street to Seventh Street; Sixth Street from Highway 169 to Walnut Street; and East 21st Street from Highway 169 to 385th Street.

Jamie Holland, director of public works, agreed with Brown’s assessment, according to city administrator Kathy Bailey.

Brown reassured the council that Sailor Street and Buccaneer Drive are not included in the release, because those streets saw heavier use during construction.

Turning to another topic, Councilman John Huisman expressed concern about who will provide meals at the Senior Center.

Bailey said there is a meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, when she hopes to receive bids.

“We’re in danger of losing meals altogether because we do not have the ability to cook and warm meals,” she noted.

“It was a federally subsidized program,” she said. “Our site was one that was cut in southern Minnesota.”

Lutheran Social Services administrates the program, while Parker Oaks in Winnebago has been preparing and delivering the meals.

Revisiting an old topic, the council approved a federal requirement to designate an engineer for the North Industrial Park project.

“This was one of the many sets of paperwork we were required to do,” Bailey said.

The city has received a $1 million federal grant to help develop a new industrial park at the intersection of Interstate 90 and Highway 169.

Bolton & Menk is named as the engineering firm.

In other business, Bailey said the city is looking for attendants for the ice skating rink. She said the warming house cannot be opened without an attendant. Attendants must be 16 years old and can work up to 30 hours per week.
