Bucs 2nd, Red Bulls 3rd at Invite

BLUE EARTH – The Blue Earth Area Bucs wrestling team took home three individual firsts along with three second-place finishes to earn second-place team honors at the Dick Maher Invitational on Saturday in Blue Earth.

The Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls captured two second-place finishes to pace their third-place team finish in the meet, while the Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Jayhawks finished seventh overall.

Class A, No. 7-ranked 285-pounder Martin Granados beat Mankato East’s Logan Swanson 7-6 to claim the 285-pound tournament title.

Granados opened the bracket with a first-round bye, before pinning United South Central’s Joe Mathews in the semifinals.

Swanson also received a bye into the semis, beating Waterville-Elysian-Morristown’s Easton Schuch 7-0 to reach the finals.

The Bucs 132-pound wrestler, Alec Huber, then collected the second of the Bucs three titles on the day.

Huber outlasted the Rebels’ Adam Knutson with an 8-6 decision in overtime of the 132-pound finals.

Huber faced Brainerd’s Ivan Vazquez in the quarterfinals, pinning Vazquez at 1 minute 30 seconds in the match.

Huber then faced the Jayhawks’ Jeremiah Colon in the semis. Colon beat the Red Bulls’ Christopher Krenz with an 11-1 major decision, but then Huber pinned Colon in 3:38 to reach the finals.

Colon went on to pin Lake Mills, Iowa’s Michael Olson in 2:01 and beat WEM’s Teid Ayers in a 6-0 decision to claim third-place honors.

Krenz then faced Vazquez, pinning him at 3:55 in the third-place bracket, but was pinned by Ayers at 2:15.

That loss put Krenz against Olsen for fifth place, with Olsen pinning the Red Bull at 2:27 in the match.

Completing the Bucs winning trifecta was senior David Franta, who downed WEM’s Ben Boran in a 9-4 decision in the 170-pound championship.

Franta faced the Red Bulls’ Phillip Bowie in the opening round, claiming the 20-3 technical fall victory at 2:47 in the match.

Franta then defeated the Jayhawks’ Stevie Tierney by technical fall, 19-3 with 15 seconds remaining in their semifinal match.

Bowie faced Mankato East’s Luke Makovsky in the third-place bracket, winning a 12-10 decision in overtime.

The Red Bull 170-pounder then lost 10-6 to Maple River’s Lukas Trio to reach the fifth-place match.

Tierney, who pinned Makovsky at 3:50 in their quarterfinal match then advanced to face Franta in the semifinals.

After losing to Franta, Tierney was then pinned by USC’s Travis Brown at 1:45, putting him against Bowie in the fifth-place match.

Tierney claimed fifth-place in the bracket, pinning Bowie with 12 seconds left in the first period of the match.

The Bucs’ Class A, No. 5-ranked 170-pounder Gus Phillips nearly captured another title for Blue Earth Area, but finished with second place in the 182-pound bracket.

Phillips opened the tournament with a bye, before pinning WEM’s Mitch Wolter with 47 seconds remaining in their semifinal match.

The Buc senior then faced Class A, No. 2-ranked 182-pounder Colten Carlson in the finals.

Carlson pinned the Red Bulls’ Nathan Gillis at 1:35 in the opening round, before pinning Maple River’s Luke Krengel in just 1:02 of the semifinals.

Carlson completed his run through the bracket and a first-place finish with a pin of Phillips in 1:10 of the championship.

Gillis advanced to face Wolter in the third-place bracket, but was pinned at 1:32 to go to the fifth-place match.

Gillis then faced Krengel, who lost to Carlson in the semis, and pinned Krengel for fifth place in just 46 seconds.

Mike Ankeny also reached the finals for the Bucs, but faced Class A, No. 3-ranked 145-pounder Dylan Herman from United South Central. Herman pinned Ankeny in 2:29 in the 145-pound championship.

After a first-round bye, Ankeny beat Lake Mills’ Brady Schmidt 5-0 in the semis to reach the finals.

Herman pinned the Jayhawks’ Zach Pettersen at 1:10 in the opening round, before pinning the Red Bulls’ Elijah Gronewold in 2:41 during the semis.

Gronewold won his first match of the tournament, pinning Maple River’s Noah Decker at 1:45, before facing Herman.

Then the Red Bull 145-pounder pinned WEM’s Brody Boran at 2:58, followed by a 2-1 win over Schmidt to claim third-place honors.

Blue Earth Area’s Adam Legred pinned Maple River’s Nathan Moore at 1:34 during 106-pound semifinal action to reach the finals. Unfortunately for Legred, Brainerd’s Cole Kubesh dealt him a 7-0 loss in the finals to give him second-place honors.

Class AA, No. 6-ranked 195-pounder Kory Brown picked up a second-place finish for the Red Bulls in the invite.

Brown beat Lake Mills’ Tyler Mary in a 7-1 decision, before pinning the Bucs’ Jared Armon at 3:49 in the semifinals.

Maple River’s Casey Decker then ended Brown’s winning run, taking the 195-pound title with a 4-0 decision in the finals.

Collin Steuber nearly claimed the 113-pound championship for the Red Bulls on Saturday.

After taking a first-round bye, Steuber pinned the Rebels’ Jesse Meyer with 14 seconds left in the match to advance to the final.

Steuber then faced Brainerd’s Drew Breun, who took home first-place honors, beating Steuber in a 10-1 major decision.

Breun opened up the tournament with a pin of the Jayhawks’ Cole Pietsch at 3:15, before pinning Maple River’s Lincoln Arndt at 2:22 in the semis.

Pietsch then rebounded with a pin of the Bucs’ Wyatt Tungland in 29 seconds in the third-place bracket.

That put Pietsch against Meyer, who he outlasted for the 7-6 win.

Arndt, who lost to Breun in the semifinals, then downed Pietsch 7-1 in the third-place match.

Red Bulls 285-pounder Mark Washa claimed third-place honors on Saturday.

Washa opened up the bracket with a loss to WEM’s Easton Schuch, before pinning the Rebels’ Joe Mathews in 3:29 in the third-place bracket.

Washa then pinned Schuch the second time he faced him, in 4:25 to garner third-place honors.

Mario Maldonado also took home third-place honors for the Red Bulls.

The Red Bull 126-pounder lost to the Rebels’ Brett Byrne by fall with 35 seconds left in the opening round, before pinning WEM’s Ryan Eustice at 4:56 in the third-place bracket.

Maldonado then advanced to pin the Bucs’ Camden Bowers at 2:49, before holding on for the 3-1 win over Lake Mills’ Krister Beal in the third-place match.

Bowers, who lost by fall to Brainerd’s Doug Fillbrandt in the semifinals, bounced back from his loss to Maldonado in the third-place bracket to claim fifth place.

Bowers held off Byrne 4-3 in the fifth-place match for the win.

Blue Earth Area’s Jordan Stelter pinned the Jayhawks’ Justin Gifferson in 2:29 to claim third-place honors in the 138-pound bracket.

Stelter started out the day pinning Mankato East’s Michael Miller in 3:08, before losing by fall to Class AA, No. 5-ranked 132-pounder Colin Ayers from WEM at 5:42 in the semifinals.

Stelter bounced back, winning over the Red Bulls’ Levi Bulfer by injury default.

Gifferson, meanwhile lost by fall to Class A, No. 10-ranked 138-pounder Russell Caldwell from Maple River in 2:18 of the semifinal match.

The Jayhawk then pinned Lake Mills’ Scott Wogen at 1:36 in the third-place bracket, before facing Stelter in the third-place match.

The Red Bulls’ Tanner Lange also took home third place in the tournament.

Lange started the 160-pound bracket with a pin of the Jayhawks’ Weston Ricard in 34 seconds, before losing a 9-1 major decision to Maple River’s Aaron Trio in the semifinals.

Lange then came back to beat the Rebels’ Seth Olson 5-1, before downing Mankato East’s Keanu Rodriguez 6-1 for third place.

Jake Denn grabbed the Jayhawks’ lone third-place finish of the tournament in the 195-pound bracket.

Denn pinned WEM’s Travis Miska in 3:37, before losing to Class A, No. 8-ranked 195-pounder Casey Decker from Maple River in the semifinals.

Decker pinned Denn in 2:31.

Denn came back, pinning Lake Mills’ Tyler Mary in 4:52 to reach the third-place match, where he claimed the 17-1 technical fall win over the Bucs’ Jared Armon at 2:50.

Red Bulls’ Luis Figueroa took home third-place honors in the 220-pound bracket.

Figueroa pinned the Jayhawks’ Jeremey Blakesley in 40 seconds during the opening round, before losing 5-2 to Maple River’s Tyler Olson in the semifinals.

Figueroa then pinned the Bucs’ Justin Ritter in the third-place bracket, before claiming third with a 10-2 major decision over WEM’s Taylor Grams.

Ritter lost to Grams by fall at 1:54 in the opening round of the bracket, before falling to Figueroa.

Blakesley lost to Grams in the third-place bracket, facing Ritter for fifth place.

Blakesley pinned Ritter in 3:30 for fifth-place honors.

Red Bulls’ Class AA, No. 8-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber opened up the 152-pound bracket with a pin of the Jayhawks’ Jesus Lopez at 1:04 in the match.

Weber then advanced to face the Rebels’ Class A, No. 4-ranked 152-pounder Derek Herman in the semifinals.

Herman pinned Weber in 1:40 to advance to the finals.

In the third-place bracket, Weber pinned the Bucs’ Tanner Wolf in 2:36, before losing a 6-5 decision to Maple River’s Noah Greenfield to finish in fourth place.

Zach Buseman opened up the 120-pound bracket with a pin of the Jayhawks’ Jerson Castro at 3:35, but lost to Brainerd’s Andy Schlosser by a 9-0 major decision in the semifinals to fall into the third-place bracket.

Buseman bounced back, beating the Red Bulls’ Chris Ettesvold 7-3, advancing to face Maple River’s Trey Wigand in the third-place match.

Wigand won, taking the 7-3 victory over Buseman.

Ettesvold, who lost by fall to Wigand in the opening round, won an 11-2 major decision over the Rebels’ Keenan Biddle in the third-place bracket.

That put Ettesvold against Buseman, and in the fifth-place match Ettesvold pinned Castro at 4:26.

Fairmont/Martin County West (3-0) travels to wrestle a Valley Conference match against Madelia/ Truman/Martin Luther at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Madelia.

Blue Earth Area travels to wrestle in a nonconference triangular at 5 p.m. Friday in Lake Mills, Iowa.
