Knights corral Red Bulls
SHERBURN – The Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights snapped the Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls undefeated start to the season, easing to the 44-10 Valley Conference victory on Friday in Sherburn.
The Knights won all but three matches to clinch the meet victory over the Red Bulls, who were 3-0 to start the season this week.
“We knew looking at the schedule that this would be a tough week for us,” said Fairmont/Martin County West head coach Adam Williamson. “We’ve had three tough matches, and tomorrow we head to Blue Earth for an invite. But to come out of this week 3-1 was a success.”
For the Knights, the success in the match started early with sophomore Riley Bohnert claiming a 14-6 major decision win over seventh grader Christian Hugget at 106 pounds.
From there, the Knights rattled off five more wins to stake a 25-0 lead.
Knight freshman Wallace Michels fought Collin Steuber through a scoreless second period in the 113-pound match to earn the 4-0 win.
Then Brandon Laborde followed suit for the Knights, shutting out Chris Ettesvold 10-0 in a major decision at 120 pounds.
The defending Class A, 120-pound state champion, and current Class A, No. 1-ranked 126 pounder junior Louie Sanders showed his power and pinned seventh grader Mario Maldonado in 3 minutes and 3 seconds during 126-pound action.
Levi Marsh also added to the Knights lead with a 21-6 technical fall win over Kolin Kelly at 132 pounds.
Devan Hagge then completed the Knights’ winning run to start the meet with a 9-1 major decision win over Levi Bulfer at 138 pounds.
“I thought that our lightweights did a good job of keeping us in the match early, and not giving up pins,” said Williamson. “We had some matches later on in the meet where we thought we could make up those points, and unfortunately tonight we just didn’t quite get it done.”
Red Bull junior Elijah Gronewold snapped the Knights streak with a 4-3 win over Damon Schmalzriedt at 145 pounds.
Gronewold scored the first two points of the match, driving Schmalzriedt to the mat with a takedown, before the Knights sophomore escaped to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
In the second period, while Gronewold was working for a pin, Schmalzriedt spun around and reversed for two points, taking the 3-2 lead going into the third period.
At the start of the period Gronewold got aggressive, needing a point to even the score, and managed to drop Schmalzriedt onto the mat for a second take down for the 4-3 lead.
Gronewold then held off a handful of Schmalzriedt manuvers trying to take back the lead to earn the win.
Class AA, No. 8-ranked 152 pounder Joe Weber then followed Gronewold with an 11-1 major decison win over Dylan Keck at 152 pounds.
Weber nearly pinned Keck twice in the opening period, scoring five back points, but the Knight senior fought hard and held off the six-point loss.
Weber then took down Keck off the start in the second period, scoring a two-point takedown before nearly pinning his opponent again.
Another point for Weber, on an unsportsmanlike move from Keck gave the Red Bull captain a 11-0 lead going into the third.
Keck managed an escape late in the period, twisting out of Weber’s hold for his lone point of the match.
The Knights then got back on track with four more victories late in the meet.
Dalton Elliot scored a takedown late in the third period to sneak by Tanner Lange 5-2 at 160 pounds, before Sidney Scott earned a 6-2 win over Phillip Bowie at 170 pounds.
Andrew Radke blanked Nathan Gillis in 182-pound action, to take the 8-0 major decision win.
Ari Harnitz then collected another win for the Knights, holding off Class AA, No. 6-ranked 195 pounder Kory Brown in the 195-pound match.
Harnitz scored three points early on an escape, before spinning Brown to the mat for a takedown and the 3-0 lead.
Despite a pair of escapes by Brown, Harnitz recorded an escape in the third period and held on for the 4-2 win.
“I thought that we were wrestling tough in all of our matches, it felt like we were close with them and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial is a good team,” said Williamson. “Kory Brown lost a close match for us tonight, and those close matches we had been winning earlier this week we just didn’t tonight. We have to find a way to win those close ones.”
Luis Figueroa claimed the third and final Red Bull win of the match at 220 pounds.
Figueroa used his speed and agility to outscore the Knights’ Shane Nelson 12-6 for the win.
Then Knights Class A, No. 6-ranked 220-pounder Nick Meixel wrestled and pinned Mark Washa at 5:03 in the 285-pound match to seal the meet victory.
