Bulldogs nip Cardinals, 5-2

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Area Cardinals girls hockey team peppered the St. Peter/Le Sueur-Henderson goal all night, firing 58 shots in the direction of Bulldogs goaltender Veronica Sinell.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, only two of those shots were able to sneak by Sinell, as the Bulldogs took the 5-2 South Central Conference victory over the Cardinals on Thursday at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

With Sinell handling the goaltending duties for the Bulldogs, it was Anna Amos who provided the offensive burst, recording a hattrick to pace the visitors in the win.

The Bulldogs struck first on the scoreboard, with Holly Gibbs smacking a rebound home for a shorthanded goal with 10:23 remaining in the opening period.

Teammate Maddie Kleshult, who leads the team with 11 points on the season, then doubled the Bulldogs lead with an unassisted wrister from the slot with 8:47 left in the period.

From there, Amos took over the offense for the Bulldogs. The freshman winger sent a centering pass from Bailey Wimes over the Cardinal netminder, Sadie Sandersfeld’s shoulder to go ahead 3-0 just over six minutes into the second period.

The duo then combined for another goal 1:28 later, with Amos firing a shot over Sandersfeld’s stick and inside the post for a tally.

Amos then completed the hattrick in the third period, carrying the puck on a 2-on-1 breakaway into the Cardinal zone and sliding a shot into the net to go ahead 5-0 just 4:05 into the third.

Despite Sinell’s stellar goaltending, the Cardinals were able to thwart her shutout bid with a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes.

Brooklyn Healey netted her second lamp lighter of the year to end Sinell’s shut out.

Tieryn Arens fired a shot from the point and Katie Hohensee stepped in front of the net and tried to push a rebound past the Bulldog goalie.

Sinell denied Hohensee a goal, but with Healey coming in from the left wing, she flipped the second rebound against the twine for a goal.

Taylor Nuss then generated her team-leading eighth goal of the season on a Jalyssa Wilson assist.

Wilson grabbed control of the puck at the Bulldog blueline, carrying it into the zone before firing a shot from the left wing.

Nuss, who was charging down the middle of the ice jammed home the rebound on Wilson’s shot to give the Cardinals their second goal of the game.

Sinell blocked a flurry of Cardinal attacks late in the third period to hold the Bulldogs lead, denying 26 of Fairmont Area’s 28 shots in the period.

The Bulldogs ripped 27 shots on goal in the game, with Sandersfeld stopped 22 in the loss.
