New Ulm hockey ices Fairmont Area
FAIRMONT – The New Ulm girls hockey team didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard, netting their first goal just 54 seconds into the game.
The Eagles scored often throughout the game to claim the 13-5 South Central Conference victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Tuesday at Martin County Arena.
“New Ulm is a good team, we knew that coming into the game tonight. They can score quickly and often and their first period really set the tempo for the rest of the game,” said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl.
The Eagles scored four goals in the opening seven minutes, and added another two goals in the final three minutes of the opening period to stake a 6-1 lead.
Taylor Nuss generated the Cardinals lone goal at the 8:57 mark of the first to avoid being shut out early.
With an Eagle power play near the midway point, Jalyssa Wilson carried the puck into New Ulm’s zone and fired a shot towards the net.
Eagles goaltender Julia Schaefer blocked the shot, but the rebound caromed into the slot where a crashing Nuss flipped a shot over Schaefer’s shoulder for shorthanded tally.
Cardinal netminder Sadie Sandersfleld blocked 11 of the Eagles 17 first period shots on net, including a point blank blast off the stick of Brittany Denn.
Wilson then fired up the Cardinal bench with an early goal in the middle period.
Kelsy Junkermeier picked up the puck behind the Eagles net and snapped a centering pass out in front to Wilson who ripped a shot top shelf for the score just one minute and 27 seconds into the period.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, New Ulm got a pair of goals to keep their multiple-goal lead in tact.
Sam Guggisberg scored one a one-timer pass from Brittany Denn at the 10:06 mark.
Then a little over two and a half minutes later Erika Ries found the back of the net, zipping a Miranda McMullen pass past Fairmont Area goaltender Emily O’Connor for the goal.
“After the first period I had the thought that I might pull Sadie from the net if they scored again,” said Kuhl. “She was doing a good job, but I just didn’t want to see her continue to get beat up in the net and thought we could give Emily a shot.”
The Cardinals were able to bookend the Eagles second period goals with another lamp lighter.
Defensemen Tieryn Arens blasted a shot from the point that bounced off an Eagle defenders skate, Brooke Lemon caught the rebound and fired a pass back to Arens at the point.
Arens’ second shot found its way past the New Ulm defense and into the net for a power play goal at the 5:47 mark.
“I was really proud of the way that we fought back the whole game. They scored quick on us in the first period, but if there is anything that we can take away from this game I don’t think that another team has scored five goals on them all season,” said Kuhl.
The Eagles were able to find the net a handful of times in the third to extend their lead, but the Cardinals scored a pair to keep it interesting.
Wilson carried the puck into the Eagles’ zone early in the third, and threw a shot on goal that found the twine to make it 9-4 early on.
In the final minutes of the game Logyn Cone sent a shot into the net for Fairmont Area’s fifth goal.
Myah Lytle fired a shot toward the New Ulm goal, where Katie Hohensee waited for the rebound and attempted a shot. Cone then came in for the second rebound and flipped it over Schaefer’s shoulder for the score.
“In the second period we played them even,” said Kuhl. “I thought that was huge. We were getting good shots and good scoring chances, and held them to two goals. I think those are some things we can take into our next game.”
