Fairmont Area flattens Worthington, 11-0

WORTHINGTON – Puck control was the name of the game for Fairmont Area as the Cardinals outshot the Worthington Trojans 66-6 during nonconference girls hockey action on Thursday night in Worthington.

It didn’t hurt that the visiting Cardinals also were able to generate double-digit scoring chances en route to posting an 11-0 shutout over the Trojans.

The Cardinal offense showed its versatility as 11 different players reached the scoring column.

Logyn Cone got the scoring started early, with an assist from Erin Rahm to take a 1-0 lead. Myah Lytle, who tallied two points on the night, then lit the lamp on an unassisted goal to take a 2-0 lead.

Defender Tieryn Arens then blasted a double-assist from Katie Hohensee and Jordyn Junkermeier past the Trojan goalie and into the net for an early 3-0 edge.

Brooke Lemon found the net on a shot off a Lytle assist, before Kelsy Junkermeier extended the lead to 5-0 on a shot off a Jenna Klages-Taylor Nuss assist.

In addition to the five shots that reached the net in the first, Fairmont Area fired another 30 on goal.

The offensive production didn’t stop there as the Cardinals added five more goals in the second.

Jalyssa Wilson found the net on the second of Klages’ two assists, before Rahm connected on an Cori Emler helper for a goal to go up 7-0.

Klages then found the net via an unassisted goal in the second frame for her third point of the night to put Fairmont Area ahead 8-0.

Nuss then distributed an assist to Alyssa Fetters for a goal before Nuss capped the second-period scoring with an unassisted goal late to take a 10-0 lead.

In the third, Brooklyn Healey took a double-assist from Jordyn Junkermeier and Fetters to beat the Trojan netminder for the final goal of the game.

Sadie Sandersfeld, who started between the pipes for the Cardinals, stopped the two shots she faced in the first, while Emily O’Connor stopped the other four Trojan shots on net.

Worthington’s Amanda Bristow stopped 30 of Fairmont Area’s shots on goal in the first, before Bailey Kruse blocked 25 shots in the final two periods for the Trojans.

Fairmont Area (3-1) plays host to Luverne at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Martin County Arena.
