Mavericks scratch Panthers from 3AA

SHERBURN – The No. 4-seeded Martin County West Mavericks held the No. 5-seeded New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers to just 235 yards of total offense as the home team won 40-14 in Section 3AA playoff football action on Tuesday night in Sherburn.

The Mavericks (8-1) advance to face the No. 1-seeded Jackson County Central Huskies at 3 p.m. Saturday in Jackson.

Jackson County Central reached the next round via a 56-0 victory over No. 8-seeded St. James.

Quarterback Jake Faber completed 9 of his 18 passes for 122 yards and one interception, while running 16 times for 104 yards to pace the Mavericks.

Faber connected with Cordell Weber, who had eight catches for 45 yards in the game, for a 32-yard touchdown strike early in the first quarter.

Anders Fuller’s PAT kick gave the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.

The Panthers evened the score though, with Dillon Parpart, who ran for 156 yards on 12 carries, racing into the end zone for a 16-yard run.

The Mavericks added three touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 57-yard pick-six interception by Alex Reese to put Martin County West up 26-6 at halftime.

Running back Thor Larson, who ran for 98 yards on 18 totes, scored the second Maverick touchdown on a 7-yard run.

After the Reese interception, Thor Larson found the end zone for the second time on a 1-yard run.

Preston Peterson, who caught five passes for 74 yards for the Panthers, caught a 31-yard connection from Spencer Tollefson in the third quarter to cut into the Mavericks’ lead.

Tanner Lange, who caught a pair of passes for 32 yards for the Mavericks, ran in the final Martin County West TD – 2-yard score – to cap the winning performance.

Sam Baker and Alex Biehn also caught three passes each for 20 yards for the Mavericks in the win.

Cordell Weber, Alex Biehn and Reese each garnered interceptions for the Martin County West defense.

Jake Sinn contributed a fumble recovery for the Mavericks’ defense.
