Three Cardinals qualify for semis

REDWOOD FALLS – Fairmont senior left-hander Allison Moeller did not heed the Section 3A individual tennis meet’s singles-bracket seedings on Thursday.

The No. 7-seeded Moeller posted back-to-back straight-set wins during Day 1 of sectional action in Redwood Falls to advance – along with Cardinal teammates and No. 2-seeded Aubrey Green and Missy Viesselman – to Monday’s 9 a.m. semifinals in St. Peter.

“Alli didn’t receive a higher seed because she played mostly at third singles for us this season, but that didn’t matter. She just played like she’s capable,” said Fairmont coach Kathy Krezel.

Moeller posted a 6-0, 6-2 first-round decision over Pipestone Area’s Abby Steffan before squaring off against No. 2-seeded Danielle Clark of Yellow Medicine East in the quarterfinals.

Moeller coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Clark to earn a spot in Monday’s semifinals against No. 3-seeded Kailey Maroney of Montevideo.

Maroney served a 6-0, 6-1 first-round loss to St. James’ Taylor Nordhausen before duplicating her margin of victory in a quarterfinal win over Redwood Valley’s Ahnna Malacek.

Malacek gained the quarterfinals via a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Martin County West’s Tori Russenberger.

Top-seeded Lorena Hernandez of St. James and No. 4-seeded Kylie Jahn of Lac qui Parle Valley will battle in Monday’s other singles semifinal at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.

Hernandez breezed to back-to-back love sets over Luverne’s Mckenzi Wenninger in first-round action before eliminating Montevideo’s Ashley Hoehne in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-2.

Jahn bested Pipestone Area’s Nicole Scotting in opening-round play, 6-1, 6-1, before knocking out River Valley’s Kalyn Haas in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-4.

Haas earned a spot in the quarterfinals by outlasting Martin County West’s Alisa Russenberger in a three-set clash, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Scotting opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Fairmont’s Ellie Tonder.

In doubles action, Green and Viesselman – the Cardinals’ regular-season Nos. 1 and 2 singles netters – displayed the chemistry that earned the tandem first-place honors at No. 1 doubles in the Mankato West Invitational earlier this fall.

Green and Viesselman disposed of LQPV’s Mary Savoy and Kristyne Hamburg in opening-round action, 6-1, 6-0, to square off against Martin County West’s Shawna Dressen and Bailey Ebeling. Dressen and Ebeling advanced by posting a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 first-round triumph over Pipestone Area’s Veronica Johnson and Tayla Sysavath.

The No. 2-seeded Green and Viesselman downed Dressen and Ebeling in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1, to earn a spot in Monday’s 9 a.m. sectional doubles semifinals against No. 3-seeded Julia Boeve and Aubrey Eckstrom of St. James.

Boeve and Eckstrom, who played Nos 2 and 3 singles during the regular season, opened Thursday with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Luverne’s Brianna Erickson and Danielle Kneip before eliminating YME’s Jordan Trotter and Jordan Glad in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-1.

In the other half of the sectional doubles bracket, No. 1-seeded Acacia Foss and Ashley Frederickson of St. James will battle No. 4-seeded Paige Adams and Kynzie Smedsrud of Luverne in Monday’s semifinals in St. Peter.

Foss and Frederickson downed Pipestone’s Sarah Woelber and Maya Bledsoe in first-round action, 6-1, 6-1 before coasting by Montevideo’s Morgan Reidinger and Nicole Erickson in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Adams and Smedsrud opened their day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over River Valley’s Ashley Johnson and Carissa Evers before outslugging Fairmont’s Sophie Shelgren and Abby Fitzgerald in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-1.

Shelgren and Fitzgerald kicked off their day by serving a 6-4, 6-1 first-round loss to Redwood Valley’s Abi Einck and Tori Jeseritz to gain the quarterfinals.

Johnson and Evers opened their day by outlasting Martin County West’s Harley Holtz and Ily Schlenk in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
