Trojans sweep Cards

NEW PRAGUE – Michael Meyer converted a second-half penalty kick into the game-winning goal to propel the New Prague Trojans to a 1-0 nonconference soccer triumph over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Saturday in New Prague.

Meyer produced the regular-season finale’s only goal at the 15:09 mark of the second half.

Fairmont Area goalkeeper Trason Arens recorded 17 saves against New Prague, while Trojan netminder Zach Jones turned away all 13 of the Cardinals’ shots on goal.

No. 12-seeded Fairmont Area (2-13-1) faces No. 5-seeded New Ulm at 4:30 p.m. today in the first round of the Section 2A playoffs at the Martin Luther College fields in New Ulm.

Girls Soccer

New Prague 4, Fairmont 2 – The Trojans scored four goals to double the score on the visiting Cardinals during the non-league regular-season finale on Saturday in New Prague.

Striker Sierra Schultz produced Fairmont Area’s first goal off of an assist from Lexi Johnson.

Hayley Jones delivered the Cardinals’ second goal of the contest off of an assist from Quincy Quiring.

Netminder Jess Koskovich made 11 saves for the Cardinals, who generated 12 shots on goal.

No. 6-seeded Fairmont Area (7-6-2) hosts No. 11-seeded Mankato Loyola at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in a Section first-round playoff game at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

The Fairmont Area boys soccer C-squad ended its season with two losses at the Albert Lea tourney Saturday.

Byron defeated Fairmont Area, 3-0, in first-round play. Goalie Thomas Havnen made seven saves for the Cardinals.

Albert Lea downed Fairmont Area in the second round, 8-0. Havnen and Tyler Head combined to make 13 stops for the Cardinals.
