Melvin L. ‘Butch’ Poole

OTTUMWA, Iowa – Funeral services for Melvin L. “Butch” Poole, 71, of Ottumwa, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, Iowa, with Pastor Richard Schlotter, officiating. Cremation will follow the service.

Mel received life’s ultimate experience at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will begin 11 a.m. Sunday, with the family present from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mel was born April 22, 1942, in Truman, Minn., to Jesse and Irene (Olson) Poole.

Mel was the owner of Poole’s Truck Service, Inc. in Ottumwa. He loved his job, and cared deeply for his employees who were like family to him. He enjoyed ice fishing in northern Minnesota, motorcycle trips throughout the states, camping trips, going to flea markets and sharing time with his dog, Buster. Mel married Florence Kogel in 1960. They were later divorced. They had four children, Todd Poole of Blue Earth, Minn., Bonnie Poole of Huntley, Minn., Steve Poole and Scott (Jennifer) Poole, both of Ottumwa, Iowa. In 1980, Mel married Judy Wilson, and joined together with her three children, Craig Wilson, Teri (James) Jacob and Rick (Mary) Wilson.

Surviving is his wife, Judy; and in addition to his children, Mel is survived by 15 loving grandchildren; and eight special great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Carol Kvittem of Winnebago, Minn., and Janice Stevens of Amboy, Minn.
