Trojans post win over Cardinals

FAIRMONT – Worthington forward Jesus Ordaz erupted for a pair of late second-half goals to propel the Trojans to a 3-1 nonconference soccer victory over the Fairmont Area Cardinals on Monday at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Cardinal mentor Jeff Kot’s halftime speech and the wind at their backs allowed Fairmont Area forward Ben Timmerman to produce the equalizer less than 2 minutes into the second half.

“At the beginning of the season, we played a lot of good first halves,” said Kot. “I thought tonight we proved that we can play with a number of teams, but we just couldn’t get that second goal.

“We got a little tired at the end, and Worthington capitalized on that during the last couple minutes of the second half.”

Indeed. But Timmerman, who opened this fall on the injured reserve list, used a perfect header to knot the game at 1-all at the 38:37 juncture of the second half.

Cardinal midfielder Evan Ward launched a right-corner direct kick inside the box and Timmerman timed his vertical leap perfectly, redirecting the ball past diving Trojan goalkeeper Kody Honius’ outstretched gloves and into the net.

Fairmont Area defender Brian Jensen displayed his takeaway skills midway through the second half, punching the ball away from both forward Anthony Sanchez and Ordaz on left-wing rushes up the field.

Cardinal netminder Trason Arens then kept the game tied at 1-all late in the game, batting away Ordaz’s right-wing blast off the drive at the 4:24 mark.

Ordaz proved persistent, however, as the Trojans’ junior forward worked the middle of the field before defender Jose Bahena spotted him.

Bahena pressed forward along the left wing before delivering a centering pass to Ordaz, who tapped home the net-finder from the middle doorstep with only 1:59 left in regulation.

Ordaz supplied an insurance goal only 52 seconds later by picking off a Cardinal crossing pass before motoring down the left wing. Ordaz lined home his second goal to seal the Trojans’ 3-1 triumph.

Honius recorded five saves to net the win for Worthington, while Arens turned away six of the Trojans’ nine shots on goal.

Fairmont Area (2-12-1) travels to New Prague for its final regular-season contest at 1 p.m. Saturday, while Worthington (8-2-1) hits the road to Glencoe today for a 4 p.m. clash with Glencoe-Silver Lake.
