Cardinal tennis lineup cages Tigers, 5-2

BELLE PLAINE – Fairmont’s second doubles duo of Jill Paris and Shantel Quist outlasted Rachel Schroers and Kate Schmit in a third-set match to help lead the visiting Cardinals past the Belle Plaine Tigers 5-2 in nonconference tennis action on Monday in Belle Plaine.

Paris and Quist dropped the opening set to Schroers and Schmit 6-4, before coming back to claim the second set by a 7-5 decision. In the third and decisive set, the Cardinal pair finished strong for the 6-4 match victory.

The win at No. 2 doubles helped the Cardinals to sweep the doubles bracket on their way to the team victory.

Sophie Shelgren and Abby Fitzgerald combined at the No. 1 doubles spot to beat Meghan Gavin and Bailey Gavin 6-1, 6-4, before Briana Gratz and Andrea Carstensen beat Savanna Schatz and Abby Brandt with a matching 6-1, 6-4 score at third doubles for the Cardinals.

Fairmont’s Aubrey Green shut out Ashley Morrison in the first-set tiebreaker to win 7-6 (7-0) and then followed that with a 6-0 second-set win at the No. 1 singles spot.

Missy Viesselman added another Fairmont point by beating Jane Schneider 6-3, 6-1 at second singles to close out the team decision.

The Tigers earned a pair of victories at the final two single positions to avoid the sweep.

Ireland Lambrecht beat Ellie Tonder 7-5, 6-0 at third singles, before Grace Olson took a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Lauren Carlson at No. 4 singles.

Fairmont (11-2, 1-1 South Central) travels to Waseca today for a 4:30 p.m. conference dual meet.

Blue Earth Area 6, Albert Lea 1 – The Bucs swept the doubles bracket to cruise by the Tigers 6-1 in nonconference tennis action on Monday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.

Kaitlyn Olsen and Karleigh Wolff teamed up to blank the Tigers’ first doubles team of Claire Ellis and Lamanda Johnson 6-0, 6-0.

The Bucs’ second doubles team of Beka Krussow and Paige Darrington then shut out Alexa Drescher and Carson McGiven 6-0, 6-0 before Lacey Benz and Anikka Wilhelmi grabbed the final win of the doubles portion of the match.

Benz and Wilhelmi beat Albert Lea’s Anna Boettcher and Skyler Hanson 6-1, 6-0,

The Bucs also took three of the four singles matches in the meet to claim the win.

Lindsey Prokop downed Lynzee Underdahl 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Natali Fellows beat Kaitlyn Larson 6-3, 6-0 at second singles.

Karli Olsen then grabbed the final Bucs’ victory, beating Mercedes Saltou 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.

Elizabeth Ogunkanbi was able to grab the Tiger win at fourth singles over Annaliese Klinkner 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.

Blue Earth Area (10-3, 1-1 South Central) plays host to New Ulm at 4:30 p.m. today in a conference dual.
