No. 1 BEA hammers Windom

WINDOM – The Class AAA, No. 1-ranked Blue Earth Area Bucs’ balanced offensive attack and smothering defense produced a 34-0 shutout of the Windom Area Eagles during nonconference football action Friday night in Windom.

The four-pronged attack of fullback Justin Ritter, running backs Gus Phillips and David Franta, and quarterback Luke Schavey accounted for the Bucs’ 244 yards on the ground.

Schavey, who also completed 8 of 20 passes for 104 yards, reeled off 44 of his 52 rushing yards on one carry to reach the end zone in the opening quarter. Schavey finished with 52 yards on just five totes. Justus Thelen kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead after one completed quarter.

Phillips, who gained 57 yards on six carries, then turned his thoughts to defense by recovering an Eagles’ fumble for a TD to open the second-quarter scoring before Thelen booted the PAT.

Franta later scored on a 6-yard run to extend Blue Earth Area’s edge to 20-0 by intermission.

Ritter, who pounded out 51 yards on six handles, bulldozed his way into the end zone from 13 yards out before Thelen kicked the PAT for a 27-0 lead in the third quarter.

Phillips later crossed the goal line from 1 yard out and Alex Stewart followed with the conversion kick to cap the Bucs’ scoring in the fourth frame.

Blue Earth Area’s defense limited Windom Area to only 31 total yards of offense, including just 11 on the ground.

Kolt Gorg and Franta each made six tackles to pace the Bucs’ defense, while Derek Johnson and Martin Granados each recovered a fumble to complement five stops apiece.

Gorg and Trevor Zierke each recorded interceptions for the maroon-and-gold, while Phillips and Franta forced Eagle fumbles.

Blue Earth Area (3-0) plays host to New Ulm at 7 p.m. next Friday night at Wilson Field in Blue Earth.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/ Truman 26, Madelia 16 – The Jaguars snuck by the Blackhawks 26-16 in Southern Minnesota Confederacy football action on Friday night in Truman.

Josh Johanson returned a kickoff 95 yards to take the early lead for the Jaguars in the first quarter, before snagging a 25-yard pass from quarterback Josh Wolter in the second quarter.

Jared Green then motored for a 40-yard touchdown and punched in the two-point conversion in the third to go up 20-16.

Josh Wolter then capped the win with a 5-yard run of his own in the fourth to give the Jaguars to victory.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (2-1) travels to Randolph for a game at 7 p.m. Friday.

Emmetsburg 41, North Union 14 – The E-Hawks used 324 rushing yards to roll past the Warriors 41-14 on Friday in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Warrior quarterback Aric Runge completed 8 of 17 passing attempts for 142 yards and one interception, while running for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Jacob Braddock, who ran 11 times for 35 yards, scored the other Warrior touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jonas Hoffman kicked both PATs for the Warriors.

Cody Runksmeier ran 13 times for 59 yards, in addition to catching two passes for 13 yards.

Marshall Klingenberg recorded 19 yards on four carries, while Trent Pedersen amassed 22 yards on five runs.

Kaleb Olson caught two passes for 48 yards, while Braddock snared four passes for 81 yards receiving.

Olson made eight tackles to lead the defensive effort, while Runge added seven unassisted tackles and Eythan Blair made four.

North Union finished with 142 passing yards and 131 yards rushing, while Emmetsburg added 52 yards passing to its offense.

North Union (0-3) hosts Western Christian in a 7 p.m. homecoming game next Friday in Armstrong.
