Fairmont tennis team coasts by Maple River, 6-1
MAPLETON – Fairmont head coach Kathy Krezel shuffled the Cardinals’ lineup and still dealt a 6-1 nonconference tennis loss to the Maple River Eagles on Tuesday in Mapleton.
Aubrey Green and Missy Viesselman, the Cardinals’ regular No. 1 and No. 2 singles netters, combined court skills at No. 1 doubles to help pace the visitors’ sweep of the bracket. Green and Viesselman outslugged Cassie Barkosky and Megan Langworthy, 6-4, 7-5.
Jill Paris and Briana Gratz then teamed at No. 2 doubles to net a 6-3, 6-4 decision over the Eagles’ Miriah Proehl and Haley Schulz.
Andrea Carstensen, who normally teams with Gratz at third doubles, and Ellie Tonder, who has filled the Cardinals’ No. 4 singles spot, then combined for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Ashley Cole and Sarah Stromer at the final doubles spot in the lineup.
Allison Moeller climbed two spots to No. 1 singles and the left-hander rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Maple River’s Hannah Proehl.
Sophie Shelgren and Shantel Quist, who normally play at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, moved to the singles division to post straight-set wins at the second and fourth positions, respectively. Shelgren defeated Rachel Rigdon, 6-1, 6-0, while Quist generated a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Steph Beto.
Abby Fitzgerald, a regular doubles player, moved to third singles and battled the Eagles’ Emily Spear to a second-set tiebreaker. Spear eventually downed Fitzgerald, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
Fairmont (9-2, 0-1 South Central) travels to New Ulm on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. conference dual meet.
Fairmont downed Maple River, 9-5, during junior varsity action Tuesday in Mapleton.
Madisyn Plumhoff, Lauren Carlson, Anagha Komaragiri, Hayley Fogelson, Marina Speckman, Chloe Diekmann and Holly Petrowiak generated singles wins for the Cardinals, while Carlson and Plumhoff later combined for a doubles victory, in addition to Petrowiak and Diekmann teaming for a win.
United South Central 5, Blue Earth Area 2 – The Rebels swept the singles bracket to help fuel a 5-2 non-league triumph over the Bucs on Tuesday at Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth.
Karli Olsen and Natali Fellows produced one of Blue Earth Area’s team points at No. 1 doubles. Olsen and Fellows combined to outslug Angela Bixby and Joyce Rubis in back-to-back 7-5 sets.
Beka Krussow and Paige Darrington generated the Bucs’ other team tally by defeating Leah Meyer and Carly Weber, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Emma Barnd and Kelly Neubauer notched USC’s lone doubles point by outlasting Kali Viland and Annaliese Klinkner, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 position.
Claire Christian and Linsey Thisius then captured a pair of three-set decisions to help pace USC’s hard-fought team triumph. Christian outdueled Karleigh Wolff at first singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, while Thisius outslugged Kaitlyn Olsen at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Kia Legred and Julia Stenzel then capped the Rebels’ team decision as Legred fended off Lindsey Prokop at third singles, 6-4, 6-4, while Stenzel defeated Anikka Wilhelmi at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Blue Earth Area (9-2, 1-0 South Central) travels to St. James on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. dual meet.
