Mavericks spike out 5th place at tourney

MANKATO – The Martin County West Mavericks went 4-1 in finishing fifth in the Minnesota State University Mankato Tournament on Saturday in Mankato.

The Mavericks dealt Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Sibley East a pair of losses in the silver divison playoff bracket to claim fifth-place team honors.

Kate Thiesse scorched six of her team-leading tournament-total 44 kills and made six digs as the Mavericks handed the Wolverines a 25-17, 25-23 loss in the Silver Division’s final game.

Jordan Gregory added six of her 24 tournament kills and 13 digs in the win.

Reilly Geistfeld contributed four of her 18 tournament kills, two blocks and had one dig as teammate Autumn Smith generated four kills and seven digs in the win.

Kennedy Janssen doled out 23 of her team-leading 104 set assists in the victory, along with five digs and three ace serves.

Haley Jensen recorded a team-leading 11 digs in the win.

The Mavericks beat the Chargers 25-16, 25-20 in the semifinals of the Silver Division.

Jensen and Molly Klima backed up the Maverick defense with eight and five digs, respectively.

The Mavericks opened the tournament with a 25-14, 25-12 win over United South Central.

Geistfeld added four kills as Klima and Jensen made four digs each in the victory.

Winona handed the Mavericks their only loss during pool play, winning 25-18, 25-17 in MCW’s second match.

Gregory and McKenna Taylor each recorded three kills in the loss.

Smith tallied four digs with Klima and Jensen each adding three.

The Mavericks bounced back from the loss with a 25-22, 26-24 win over St. Peter in the final round of pool play.

Thiesse had 11 kills and six digs, to go along with Gregory’s four kills and four digs in the win.

Martin County West (5-1) travels for a Valley Conference game against Alden-Conger at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Visitation Tournament – The Fairmont Cardinals volleyball team went 1-3 at the Visitation Tournament, handing St. Paul Como Park a 2-1 loss this past weekend.

Kayla Lardy smacked a team-leading 38 kills in four matches for the Cardinals, including 16 in the 22-25, 25-23, 15-13 win over the Cougars in the first match.

Lardy aso added three of her five ace serves on the weekend and made 12 digs. Sydney Glienke contributed nine kills and nine digs, while Kristen Campe made 10 of her 40 digs on the weekend.

Emily Kim doled out 26 of her 71 set assists for the weekend in the win for the Cardinals.

Tieryn Arens went a perfect 8-for-8 from the serving line, with a pair of aces for Fairmont.

Simley then downed Fairmont 25-16, 20-25, 15-13 in the second round and South St. Paul beat the Cardinals 25-22, 22-25, 16-14 in the final round of pool play.

Courtney Mosloski pounded eight kills, while Glienke and Campe each made 11 digs.

Mora then ended Fairmont’s run in the Silver Bracket, winning 25-11, 25-21.

Glienke, Kersten Shantz and Mosloski each tallied four kills, while Alyson Eversman went a perfect 8-for-8 serving with three aces.

Fairmont (1-5) hosts St. James in a South Central Conference match at 7:30 p.m. today at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont.

Sleepy Eye Tournament – The Truman Bluejays went 1-3 in the Sleepy Eye tournament over the weekend.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s dealt the Bluejays an opening-match loss, winning 25-19, 25-12, before Truman responded to grab their lone victory.

Truman downed the Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain Knights 25-11, 25-22 in the second round.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial then finished off the Bluejays, winning 25-13, 25-8 in the final match of the tourney.

Emily Zaharia tallied a team-leading 12 kills, 17 digs, one block and two ace serves for the Bluejays.

Alexis Jahnz added nine kills and 27 digs, while Hanna Hartman had one ace serve with six kills.

Cydney Kilian smacked two ace serves from behind the line for Truman, with Stephanie Jahnz recording 11 digs in the tournament.

Truman (1-5) hosts Maple River in a Valley Conference match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Truman.

Luverne Invite – The Blue Earth Area Bucs captured their first wins of the season over Luverne and Edgerton Public in the Luverne Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

The Bucs finished 2-3 on the weekend.

The Bucs handed Luverne a 25-15, 20-25 loss, scoring the most points in the two games to earn the win.

Audrey McDonald tallied 10 of her 26 tournament digs, along with three of her 18 kills and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the service line in the game to lead the Bucs.

Nicole Krinke doled out 11 of her 37 set assists on offense in addition to the six digs and three blocks she recorded on defense.

Devyn Braunshausen also added six kills and six digs to the Bucs’ offensive effort.

Southwest Christian then dealt the Bucs a 25-16, 25-18 loss in the second match of the tournament.

Elizabeth Ellis tallied three of her team-leading five blocks in the match, while Ciarra Olson made four digs.

The Bucs then rebounded for their second win, beating Edgerton Public 29-27, 25-22, led by Ciarra Olson’s two blocks and seven of Haley Resutek’s 16 tournament digs.

Rena Zierke also added a perfect 4-for-4 serving effort.

Pipestone then stopped the Bucs momentum with a 25-22, 25-21 win.

Mariah Twedt went 5 of 6 serving, including two aces and Bethany Olson added four digs for the Bucs.

Vermillion, South Dakota then handed Blue Earth Area its final loss, winning 25-13, 25-15.

Emma Olson went 4 of 5 serving with one ace for the Bucs.

Blue Earth Area (2-6) hosts St. Peter in a SCC match at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Blue Earth.

Sleepy Eye Tournament The Martin Luther/ Granada-Huntley-East Chain Knights went 0-3 on the weekend in the Sleepy Eye Tournament.

Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial dealt them their first loss, 25-18, 25-15 before Truman defeated them 25-11, 25-22 in the second round.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s then captured the win in the Knights’ final match, winning 25-17, 25-16.

Alexis Brummond recorded 17 digs, while Rachel Shumski tallied four blocks to top the Knights’ defensive efforts.

Amber Schulz and Hunter Payne then combined on offense, with Schulz smacking 14 kills and Payne distributing 30 set assists.

Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain (1-6) plays host to St. Clair in a Valley Conference game at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Northrop.
