Mavericks trample Cougars

COMFREY – The Martin County West football team opened up the season in a new conference and has yet to be beaten.

After claiming their first victory last week, the Mavericks shut out the Cedar Mountain/ Comfrey Cougars 39-0 on Saturday in Comfrey.

Thor Larson raced for 112 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Maverick ground offense to 247 total rushing yards.

Jake Faber racked up 103 yards of offense, completing 5 of his 8 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Faber also scampered across the goal line for a rushing touchdown.

Cordell Weber caught two passes for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Brandon Poppe and Ethan Hurn each returned interceptions for touchdowns on the defensive side.

Poppe snared a pass in the third quarter for the 63-yard score, before Hurn returned his for a 37-yard touchdown.

James Theobald forced one Cougar fumble and made 10 tackles, while Aaron Fischer, Brock Burmeister and Tanner Lange each contributed four tackles for the Martin Couny West defense.

Martin County West (2-0) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a conference game at 7 p.m. Friday in Sherburn.
