Red Rock touts concert season
FAIRMONT – Red Rock Center for the Arts in Fairmont has unveiled its 2013-2014 concert season lineup, with seven performances over nine months.
Red Rock director Sonja Fortune said the schedule offers international artists and local favorites.
“Simon Shaheen is probably the most unique,” she said, noting the artist is playing concerts in the Twin Cities during his stop in Minnesota. Shaheen will come to Fairmont for only one night.
He has been heralded by the Minnesota Guitar Society, which is sponsoring his visit, as one of the most significant Arab musicians, performers and composers of his generation. His performance locally will be a duo with the oud and violin. An oud is a pear-shaped instrument similar to a lute and used extensively in Middle Eastern music.
“It would easily be a $45 concert in the cities,” Fortune said.
Most concerts at Red Rock cost $10 with advanced tickets, or $12 at the door. They begin at 7 p.m.
The first concert slated for the season is the Rod Cerar Orchestra on Sept. 14. The orchestra is known for its variety of music, including polkas, waltzes, big band and swing.
The October performance is a presentation of “Hansel & Gretel” by local children. It will be Red Rock’s first time offering a Children’s Theatre Workshop with the help of Paul Warshauer, a prominent theatre name in New Ulm.
The children’s performance will be offered 1:15 p.m. Oct. 26 for a donation.
Appearing Nov. 16 is singer/songwriter Chad Elliott, followed on Dec. 20 by Red Rock’s annual Glenn Henriksen Christmas Concert.
March 1 brings the Andy Gibson Band, a country and rock group, the leader of which has performed at the Martin County Fair in 2012 and 2013.
Simon Shaheen follows on March 21.
April 18-19 brings the third annual murder mystery dinner, written and produced by Warshauer and featuring local actors. Tickets for the dinner and show cost $40.
Wrapping up the season is Galaxy on May 2. The band will play hits from the ’50s and ’60s, and audience members are encouraged to dance to the music.
