Cougars roar past Cardinals

MANKATO – Mankato East junior Lizzy Vetter netted a hat trick in the opening half as the Cougars downed the Fairmont Area Cardinals 5-1 in nonconference girls soccer action on Thursday at the Kennedy Soccer Complex in Mankato.

The Cougars took the 3-0 lead into halftime thanks to the feet of Vetter.

Cardinal netminder junior Alex Christianson made 10 saves in the opening half.

Fairmont Area junior forward Sierra Schultz netted the Cardinals’ only tally in the second half off an assist from senior midfielder Brooklyn Leichtnam.

Rebekah Kolstad and Elise Braswell added to the Cougars’ lead in the second half, each sending a kick into the net for goals.

Fairmont Area senior Jess Koskovich tended the net in the second half for the Cardinals, making six saves.

The Fairmont Area girls soccer team (1-1) travels to Mankato Loyola next Thursday for a nonconference game against the Crusaders at 5 p.m. in Mankato.

The Mankato East Cougars (3-1) play host to Mankato Loyola in a 5 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday at the Kennedy Soccer Complex in Mankato.

Fairmont Area and Mankato East played to a 1-1 tie during junior varsity soccer action on Thursday in Mankato.

Myah Lytle scored the Cardinals’ lone goal off a Taylor Wolf pass.

Haley Burmeister patrolled the net, making seven saves in the game for Fairmont.
