St. Peter knocks off Fairmont

ST. PETER – Sophomore striker Kaelin Weiss continued his torrid scoring ways by producing a hat trick to engineer the St. Peter Saints’ 5-1 victory over Fairmont Area Cardinals during South Central Conference soccer action on Tuesday night in St. Peter.

Weiss, who improved his seasonal goal-scoring total to five, staked the Saints to an early 1-0 lead by nailing a 20-yarder only five minutes into the visiting Cardinals’ season-opener.

Midfielder Ben Gault then doubled St. Peter’s edge by converting midfielder Melic Thomas’ corner kick into a net-finding blast just nine minutes into the opening half.

After Saints’ goalkeeper Arick Mayo made a leaping save on a direct free kick, Weiss extended the home team’s lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the night.

Forward Ryan Van Rossum delivered a crossing pass to Weiss, who drilled home the goal from the middle to widened St. Peter’s lead to 3-0 with eight minutes left in the first half.

Weiss completed his hat trick 17 minutes into the second half, unleashing a left-wing net-finding blast to extend the gap to 4-0.

Van Rossum joined Weiss in the goal-scoring column by connecting on a left-wing strike for a 5-0 margin.

Midfielder Evan Ward then spoiled Mayo’s shutout bid by converting a double-assist from Joe Nordquist and Derek Hunwardsen to beat the sprawling Saints’ netminder with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Cardinal goalkeeper Trason Arens recorded eight saves, while Mayo turned away eight Fairmont Area shots on goal.
