Martins eliminate Muskies
DELANO – The Fairmont Martins amateur baseball team grabbed its first lead of the game in the eighth inning to sneak past Region 3 champion the New Market Muskies 4-2 on Sunday in the Class ‘C’ state amateur baseball tournament in Delano.
Fairmont (25-6) advances to face Region 8 No. 3 seed Lastrup at 11 a.m. Saturday in Delano.
Max Waletich used his one hit of the game to his team’s advantage, driving in a run in the eighth inning to help the Martins overcome a 2-2 tie.
Scott Chirpich smacked a double to lead off the scoring rally in the eighth before racing to third on a Shaun McGuire single.
Chirpich then motored home on Waletich’s hit, while McGuire, who went 1-for-4 from the plate, rounded third and scored on the throw down to second to get Waletich out.
New Market broke a scoreless game open in the fourth inning, courtesy of a Bryce Rippentrop double.
Scott Lyden smacked a hit to take first and wheeled to second on a Fairmont throwing error.
Rippentrop, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, then drove in the first run of the game with double.
Another Martins’ fielding error on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Bergstrom then allowed Rippentrop to round third and score to give the Muskies a 2-0 lead.
Fairmont hurler Shaun McGuire shut down the Muskies’ offense from there, allowing just the two runs, on five hits and striking out eight in nine innings to take the win.
The Martins’ offense then regrouped in the sixth, scoring to make it a one-run game.
Tanner Nawrocki walked before Logan Peymann laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Nawrocki to second.
Scott Chirpich, who went 2-for-3 in the game, then used his first hit of the game to score Nawrocki to make it 2-1.
Dustin Sobolik also provided some offense, going 1-for-3, and in the seventh inning recorded a base hit before scoring the tying run.
Ian Bents moved Sobolik to third with a single, before a wild pitch allowed Sobolik to score to even the game at 2-2.
Derek Bergstrom pitched seven innings for New Market, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out seven in the loss.
Nate Rost pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one in relief for the Muskies.
