Redbirds sweep Martins

LUVERNE – The location may have been different, but the No. 2-seeded Luverne Redbirds amateur baseball team manufactured the same outcome as they defeated the Fairmont Martins 7-3 in Game 2 of the Region 13C Finals best-of-three series Friday in Luverne.

Fairmont (23-6) will now await their opponent from Region 2C for the opening game of the Class C State Tournament next Saturday in Delano.

Luverne (21-7) will have a first-round bye in the tournament, playing their first game on Friday, August 23 in Delano.

Luverne defeated Fairmont 13-4 on Wednesday in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series in Fairmont, before advancing with Friday’s win.

Andrew Deboer pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Redbirds Friday, keeping the home-town team in the lead before Brian Beuning came in and shut the door for the second-straight game.

Beuning struck out 11 on his way to helping the Luverne clinch the first win.

Max Waletich and Adam Schmidt smacked solo home runs for the Martins to help them stay within striking distance in the fourth inning.

Dustin Sobolik drove in the third run for Fairmont with an RBI single.

Tanner Nawrocki and Taylor Morris added singles for the Martins, while Schmidt also pounded a triple.

Brandon Olson pitched eight innings for Fairmont, with Scott Chirpich closing out the final inning in relief.
