El Loy D. Hinz

FAIRMONT – Funeral services for El Loy D. Hinz, 83, of rural Fairmont, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont with Rev. Anthony Bertram officiating. Burial with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin Co. VFW Post 1222 will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont.

El Loy passed away Wednesday evening, Aug. 7, 2013, at the Trimont Health Care Center due to complications from a stroke he had in May. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

El Loy Dennis Hinz was born March 15, 1930, near Fairmont, the son of Adolph and Edna (Behrens) Hinz. He was baptized and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Fraser Township. He attended Zion Lutheran School and then attended Fairmont High School, graduating in 1948. That same year El Loy enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Utah and Missouri as a cook. After his service in the Army, he returned home and helped his parents on the farm. On Nov. 16, 1957, El Loy was united in marriage to Margery Goltz in Elmore, Minn., and they were blessed with four children. Besides his love for farming, El Loy also worked at Fairmont Railway Motors and retired in 1994. Margery passed away on April 6, 2003. El Loy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fairmont where he held various offices. He was a 50-year member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36. He played cards at the Senior Citizens building and enjoyed a hot cup of coffee while visiting with friends. He enjoyed dancing, especially square dancing, eating candy, teasing friends and family and playing jokes on others.

He is survived by four children, Audrey Diekmann (Kevin) of Trimont, David E. Hinz of Fairmont, John and Angie Rieck-Hinz of Story City, Iowa, and Patti Knutson (Kevin) of Chaska, Minn.; grandchildren, Kristin Diekmann of Mankato, Jenna and Jacob Knutson of Chaska; two brothers, Willis Hinz and his wife, Ivadelle of Mesa, Ariz., and Lyle Hinz and friend, Jan of Albert Lea; sister, Arlys Schroeder of Wells, Minn.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

El Loy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margery Hinz; granddaughter, Katie Knutson; one brother, Vern Hinz and his wife, Norine; brother-in-law, Norbert Schroeder.
