Calvin Stewart (Cal) Christensen
WORTHINGTON – Graveside military rites and burial for Calvin Stewart (Cal) Christensen, 86, of Worthington, will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in the Worthington Cemetery. A service to celebrate Cal’s life will follow at 2 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington, followed by a time of fellowship.
Calvin passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington.
Cal was born Aug. 10, 1926, in Worthington, Minn. Cal graduated from Worthington High School in 1944. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Jean Smith on Oct. 2, 1949, at the Summit Lake Presbyterian Church in Reading, Minn. They resided in Fairmont until 2000, when they returned to their hometown. During the early years of their marriage, Cal drove a delivery truck for Old Home Bread. He then sold insurance with New York Life. Cal started his own business, Cal’s Carpet Cleaning in the late 1960’s, in which he took great pride. He sold the business and retired in 1986. Cal took great pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren. Their visits to Grandpa’s created many memories. They remember him as the generous, kind-hearted, funny, gentle man who took an active interest in their lives. While living in Fairmont, Cal played golf, enjoyed his coffee groups, fished, and was always ready for a game of cards. Watching sports was an important part of his life, knowing there was a sport for every season. ESPN’s birth was a highlight in Cal’s life. He was a passionate fan of the Gophers, Twins, and Vikings. Cal and Jean had season tickets to the NorthStars and Gopher football for many years. Cal was always looking for a bargain, and eBay became another of his pastimes. Cal was a member of the First Congregational Church in Fairmont for 50 years. They joined the Westminster Presbyterian Church when they moved back to Worthington. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, and the VFW. Those left with wonderful memories of Cal include his daughter, Dawn Parker (Mick) of Iowa Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kelly Jean of West Des Moines, Iowa and Bryan of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Also surviving is a brother, Mike Christensen of Texas; six sisters-in-law, Joyce Rogers, Essie (John) Boltjes, Pudge (Larry) Comnick, Duff Bertrand, Corky (Richard) Robinson, all of Worthington, and Sandy (Larry) Brouwer of Edgerton. He is remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Cal treasured friendships with many friends from both “hometowns,” those he met on winter travels to Texas, and new friends at The Meadows. Cal was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; four sisters, Lavina, Helen, Mabel, and Evelyn; and two brothers, Ray and Eddie.
