SHERBURN – Mass of Christian Burial for Marie Rasmussen, 93, of Sherburn, formerly of Alpha, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Jackson, with Father Brian Sutton and Father Charles Quinn officiating. Burial will be in the Good Shepherd Cemetery, Jackson.
Marie passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Long Prairie Memorial Hospital in Long Prairie, Minn. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Osterberg Funeral Home, Jackson and one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church.
Marie Josephine Rasmussen was born Sept. 22, 1919, in rural Trimont, Minn., the daughter of Patrick and Loia (Lochner) McGowan. She graduated from Trimont High School in 1937. On Nov. 20, 1941, she was united in marriage to Melvin Dallas Rasmussen at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Trimont. After their marriage, Marie helped run Shorty’s Standard Oil Station in Petersburg and had worked at Fitzsimmon’s Jewelry and later for Gervais Jewelry for over 25 years as a sales clerk. She also helped on the farm that they owned in Petersburg Township. Marie and Melvin moved to the Temperance Ridge Assisted Living Home in Sherburn. Melvin passed there on March 4, 2013. In April, Marie moved up to Long Prairie to be with her son, Donald. Marie passed away at the Long Prairie Hospital on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 5 days. Marie was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Jackson. She was a member of the Jackson American Legion Auxiliary, where she had served as president. She had been a group leader for the 4-H and a den mother with the Cub Scouts. She had been involved in the plays with the Petersburg PTA. They loved to fish on the river near Pierre, S.D. and in Canada, making at least two trips to each place every year. She loved to dance, especially at the Fox Lake Ballroom, where she had met Melvin and they continued to dance until just a few years ago. Marie is survived by her two sons, Donald (Diane) Rasmussen of Long Prairie, Minn., and Patrick (Connie) Rasmussen of Owatonna, Minn.; 3 grandchildren, Dawn (Greg) Rasmussen-Graves of Long Prairie, Drew (Brenda) Rasmussen of Little Falls, and Katie Rasmussen of Minneapolis; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson; a brother, Raymond (Audrey) McGowan of Fairmont, Minn,; a sister-in-law, Donna McGowan of Fairmont, Minn. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin; a son, Michael; two brothers, Jack and Donald McGowan; and a sister, Dorothy McGowan.
