Fairmont goes 1-1 in district

GREEN ISLE – Fairmont VFW Post 1222 erupted for three runs in the bottom of the third before adding two insurance runs in the sixth to upend Chaska, 5-2, during an elimination game on Friday in the 2nd District VFW baseball tournament in Green Isle.

Fairmont (13-9) advances to face the winner between New Ulm Gold and Dassel in another elimination-bracket game at 4 p.m. today in Arlington.

Nathan Johnson and Kale Fritz each produced RBI doubles for Post 1222, while teammates Ben Abel and Nathan Gillis each collected RBI singles.

Tyler Tennyson generated two hits for Fairmont, while Parker Monsen and Jack Waletich each chipped in singles.

Tennyson allowed only one hit in four shutout innings of relief to earn the victory for Post 1222. Tennyson recorded two strikeouts and issued two walks.

Cole Emler gave up two runs – one earned – on three hits, issued four walks and struck out one in three innings to receive no decision for Fairmont.

In earlier postseason action on Friday, Eagan doubled up Fairmont, 8-4, during a winners-bracket game in Green Isle.

Jack Waletich notched a pair of doubles en route to a team-leading three RBIs for Post 1222, while Spencer Chirpich delivered two hits, including a double.

Matt Lytle doubled and Nathan Johnson singled to round out Fairmont’s offensive effort.

Lytle allowed eight runs on 13 hits, recorded two strikeouts and issued one walk in six innings of work.
