Fairmont shuts out Dassel in district
ARLINGTON – Near-perfect pitching and timely hitting engineered the Fairmont VFW Post 1222 baseball team’s first-round postseason victory on Thursday.
Starting pitcher Clayton Maakestad and reliever Spencer Chirpich combined on a one-hit shutout to guide Fairmont to a 1-0 victory over Dassel during the 2nd District VFW Tournament in Arlington.
Fairmont (12-8) advances to face the winner between Eagan and Sibley East at 4 p.m. today in Green Isle.
Tyler Tennyson, who produced three of Post 1222’s five hits on the opening-round contest, lined a single during the bottom of the fourth inning. Tennyson advanced to second base on Jack Waletich’s fielder’s choice before crossing the plate with the game’s only run on Ben Abel’s RBI double.
Maakestad allowed one hit in five scoreless innings, recording eight strikeouts and issuing four walks to earn the victory for Post 1222.
Chirpich worked the final two frames, notching a pair of strikeouts and one walk without giving up a hit or a run to earn the save.
Parker Monsen generated Fairmont’s other hit on the game.
Dassel starting pitcher Dalton Asplin gave up one earned run on five hits, recorded two strikeouts and did not issue a walk in six innings to absorb the loss.
