WBE legion gains finals; Martins win

MILROY – Christian Haugh hammered the eventual game-winning, two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning on Sunday to propel the Winnebago American Legion Post 82/Blue Earth Post 89 baseball team into the Division II, 2nd District championship game.

Haugh’s late hitting heroics and Dallas Barslou’s seven-hit complete-game gem engineered Winnebago/Blue Earth’s 2-1 triumph over Luverne during Sunday’s battle of district unbeatens in Milroy.

Winnebago/Blue Earth (16-3) awaits the winner of the playback bracket – either Luverne, St. James or Springfield – at noon next Sunday in the district finals in Milroy, with a Division II state tournament bid at stake.

Trailing 1-0, Brandyn Olsen smacked a single for WBE in the top of the sixth inning before Haugh delivered a two-run round-tripper.

Barslou then held Luverne scoreless in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to secure his complete-game victory. Barslou allowed one run on seven hits, struck out three and walked two in seven innings of work.

Olsen produced two hits for WBE, David Franta tripled, while Barslou and Carter Hanson each contributed a single to Posts 82/89’s winning ways.


Winnebago/Blue Earth 3, Springfield 2 – David Franta singled and scored the game-winning run on Brandyn Olsen’s hit-and-run single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to guide Winnebago/Blue Earth to a 3-2 victory over Springfield on Saturday in Milroy.

Franta and Seth Anderson each produced two hits on the game, with Anderson delivering an RBI double during WBE’s two-run bottom of the fourth.

Carter Hanson also doubled home Anderson in the fourth for WBE, Christian Haugh produced a triple, Dallas Barslou doubled, while Alex Stewart chipped in a hit.

Quinn Huisman allowed two runs on five hits, struck out two, walked one and hit one batter in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game gem victory.

Amateur Baseball

Fairmont 14, Tracy 2 – Starting pitcher Ian Bents and reliever Jordan Petschke combined on a five-hitter to guide the Fairmont Martins to a 14-2, eight-inning Class ‘C’ amateur baseball playoff victory over the Tracy Express on Saturday in Tracy.

The No. 1-seeded Martins (19-3) swept the best-of-3 postseason series with the No. 8-seeded Express to advance to the Region 13C tournament.

Fairmont, who will await the results of tonight’s regional seeding meeting, will play host to either Worthington or Minneota at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont in Game 1 of another best-of-3 series.

Bents recorded three strikeouts, issued two walks and allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits in six innings of work to earn the victory. Petschke notched three strikeouts and walked one in two innings of relief.

Shaun McGuire collected three hits and scored two runs to spearhead the Martins’ 14-hit attack, while teammate Scott Chirpich doubled, walked twice and scored five runs on the game.

Adam Schmidt doubled twice, walked and scored a pair of runs for Fairmont, while Levi Becker singled twice and drew two walks.

Bents generated two hits and walked, Luke Becker singled twice, Petschke singled and drove in two runs with sacrifice flies, while Jon Ellis singled and scored two runs.
