Fairmont VFW belts Mapleton in playoffs
BLUE EARTH – Fairmont VFW Post 1222 erupted for 13 hits to engineer a 10-4 victory over Mapleton during opening-round playoff baseball action on Thursday in Blue Earth.
Fairmont (8-8) plays the winner between host Blue Earth and Lake Crystal at 1 p.m. today in Winnebago in a second-round 2nd District, Southwest Sub-District Tournament clash.
The loser of the Fairmont-Blue Earth-Lake Crystal game plays in an elimination game at 4 p.m. today in Blue Earth, while the winner is idle until 1 p.m. Saturday in Blue Earth.
Spencer Chirpich, Parker Monsen, Jack Waletich and Ben Abel each produced two hits to trigger Fairmont’s high-octane offensive performance. Chirpich, Waletich and Abel each doubled, with Chirpich collecting two RBIs and Monsen driving in one run. Waletich and Abel each scored two runs.
Cole Emler generated a two-run single for Post 1222, while teammates Ryan Brooks and Nate Johnson each contributed a hit.
Emler allowed one unearned run on one hit, struck out four and did not issue a walk in five innings of work to earn the pitching victory for Fairmont.
Rodney Engstrom gave up three runs – two earned – on two hits, walked two and fanned two in 1 1/3 innings of relief for Post 1222. Tyler Tennyson struck out one in closing out the final 2/3s of an inning.
