Many hands joining local market
FAIRMONT – Many Hands LLC is a mom-and-pop operation, with the mom and pop in this case being Troy and Julie Olson of Trimont.
Last week, the couple got permission to begin residential garbage pickup in Fairmont. Just a month ago, they began operating in Ormsby, Fox Lake, East Chain, Imogene and Granada, after completing a door-to-door sales campaign in the small towns.
“My wife runs the trucks, and two of our kids help her out in the summer,” Troy Olson said.
He had been hauling garbage for the city of Fairmont for 13 years, but it was his decision to retire from the National Guard that prompted the Olsons to look into another source of income to support the family of six. Troy and Julie have four girls and two boys between the ages of 4 and 14.
Troy was deployed three times since 2003: the first time on a 10-month mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, then almost two years in Iraq, and most recently a year in Kuwait.
“I’m ready to retire and be home,” he said.
Many Hands will start residential garbage pickup July 23 in Fairmont.
The company’s bags will be available for purchase at Poppe’s 66, Moore’s Auto, Graham Tire and the Shell service station on Albion Avenue. The cost is 10 for $20, which includes tax.
Every Tuesday, Many Hands will hit the north end of town, driving every street from Blue Earth Avenue north, picking up bags. On Wednesdays, the company will be on the south side of Fairmont.
Customers can contact Many Hands with questions, but otherwise, if they put bags out on the curb by 8:30 a.m. Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on their location, Many Hands will haul the garbage to Prairieland in Truman.
“I don’t do contracts, so if they don’t like my service, they can switch. There’s no hassle,” Troy said.
Many Hands also offers dumpsters for residential cleanup. A yard and a half-sized dumpster costs $60, including delivery and pickup.
