Sleepy Eye VFW sweeps Fairmont

SLEEPY EYE – Sleepy Eye VFW Post 800 scratched out a 2-1 extra-inning victory over Fairmont Post 1222 in Game 1 on Thursday before the host baseball lineup posted a 10-2 win during the nightcap in Sleepy Eye.

Post 800 plated the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth during the two teams’ opener.

Matt Lytle, Parker Monsen and Tyler Tennyson each produced two hits to top Post 1222’s nine-hit performance, while Nathan Gillis singled home the visitors’ only run in the top of the first inning.

Jack Waletich and Cole Emler each supplied one hit for Fairmont in Game 1.

Lytle allowed two runs – one earned – on only three hits in 7 2/3 innings of work to absorb the loss. Lytle struck out five and walked three.

Sleepy Eye erupted for seven runs during the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 to extend a 3-2 lead into an eventual eight-run victory.

Nate Johnson collected two hits to top Post 1222 during the nightcap, Monsen generated an RBI single, while Gillis chipped in a hit.

Clayton Maakestad started on the hill for Fairmont, giving up four runs – two earned – on five hits, struck out three and walked three in five-plus innings to take the loss.

Tennyson allowed six runs – five earned – on six hits, and walked one in one inning of relief.

Fairmont VFW (7-8) opens the Second District, Southwest Sub-District Tournament by facing Mapleton at 4 p.m. next Thursday in Blue Earth.
