Post 36 shut out Mankato

FAIRMONT – Fairmont American Legion Post 36 right hander Jordan Voss threw seven innings and gave up just four hits to shut out the Mankato Nationals 2-0 on Monday at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

Voss pitched his way around a pair of base runners after giving up a double to Ben Kleist and walking Kyle Reynolds to put runners on first and second with two outs in the second inning.

The starter, who struck out three and walked three in the win, got Mankato’s No. 9 hitter to fly out to Bryce Holm in centerfield for the third out, leaving the game scoreless.

“I thought our defense was good, we made all the plays that we needed to so we could get the win,” said Fairmont head coach Scott Chirpich.

The Fairmont bats came alive in the fourth and fifth innings, to take the first and only lead of the game.

Jay Ruen started off the fourth for Fairmont with a blast to centerfield and raced to third for a triple.

The designated hitter, Mitch Pfingsten, then used one swing to right for a double to score Ruen.

Christian Petschke, who went 3-for-3 from the plate, used one of his three hits to center to move Pfingsten to third, but the offensive rally stalled, making it 1-0.

“We got off to a slow start offensively, but the triple by Jay and the double from Mitch in the fourth was big,” said Chirpich.

Luke Becker made his lone hit of the game count in the fifth, starting Fairmont’s second scoring rally.

Luke Becker wheeled to second on a Spencer Chirpich bunt and then took third on an error by Mankato’s second basemen on a hit by Levi Becker.

Ruen, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, then drove in Luke Becker for the run with a hit to right center.

After Mankato got a leadoff double from Conor Wollenzien in the seventh, Voss again was able to pitch his way out of a jam with some help from his defense.

With Wollenzien on second Kleist smacked a grounder to Luke Becker at second for the force at first, moving Wollenzien to third.

Reynolds walked for the third time in the game, to put runners on the corners, but a grounder by Tyler Matlestad was turned by Chirpich and Luke Becker for a double play to end the game.

“I thought that Jordan did a good job of keeping their hitters off balance and letting the defense behind him do the work,” said Chirpich.

Shane Sellner went 2-for-3 to lead Mankato from the plate with a pair of singles.

Mankato’s Devin Ries pitched six innings, giving up the two earned runs on 10 hits, striking out three and walking one to absorb the loss.

Fairmont American Legion Post 36 (6-2) travels for a 7 p.m. game against the Mankato Nationals on Friday in Mankato.
